International Music (in English)

I think one of the great ways to get our young to learn English is through music. For many reasons. as I outline in this article. It is even better, more inspiring, more engaging when they see their fellow country men/women singing in English! So in this spirit, let's share some of our favorite international artists singing in their second language!  Get the full player and lyric book HERE.

Today's entry - Outlandish! This group is really "outlandish" - 3 guys from all over the world (Morocco, Pakistan, Honduras), meeting in Denmark and making cool, message filled, hope filled music for the "worldly" youth of today. Listen and be moved and move!

Today, I'm introducing someone from Africa, specifically Nigeria - ASA. She is a incredibly special. Listen as she kills this classic - Fire On The Mountain. There are so many great African artists singing in English!

Wonderful thread, David : ))). Do you know that Nat'l Geographic has what looks like a great world music site, but because of my region, I cannot even hear the songs? Maybe you can try, see if it works from Korea. If it does, I'll explore that proxy thing : ).

Check out my latest music find, Adama Dram from Burkina Faso! It isn't in English, but there are no words at all... so....


Also, the site beemp3.com has become much more comprehensive. Not sure how they do it, but lots and lots of free music to download. Hurry while it lasts....

Ellen, you can feel those drums go right through your skin!

Today's entry is from the Czech Rep. , my old home. I still follow the music and must say I applaud the few groups there who are courageous enough to sing in English ( Czechs are usually VERY laid back but when it comes to their music, really don't go for Czechs singing in English. ). The band is called Support Lesbiens and the song is English Stereo. It was a big hit, lots of radio play.....

Our "in"famous member Justino blogged about this guy (highlighting the song, Just Like a Waving Flag)and I stumbled onto him again while watching Al Jazeera and Riz Khan. Erudite Somali who is doing some great stuff in English. Here he does the ABCs......

In Malaysia, we constantly strive for unity among the many races that live in this country. So, here's a song featuring many artistes & celebrities from Malaysia such as Afdlin Shauki (actor/comedian/singer/director...), Awie (front-man of the rock band "Wings"/actor/comedian), Pete Teo (singer/short-film actor), Jaclyn Victor (Winner of the 1st Malaysian Idol & actress of Yasmin Ahmad's "TaleNtime"), Reshmonu (singer), Ning Baizura (singer/actress), Jason Lo (singer/actor), Suki (Winner of the reality show "One in a Million") and the list goes on & on. That song of Yuna's - Deeper Conversation would be great for the classroom! I'm sure especially Malaysian students would love it and I love how the pictures add meaning and context! Great find!!

Ellen, the Nat. Geographic Music site is gold! Sorry you can't access it but wow! I'll be highlighting a few of my fav. African artists mentioned there - here....Thanks a million! Wonderful sharing. I'll be listening to this as I write up a paper this afternoon at home.
