About

I think one of the great ways to get our young to learn English is through music. For many reasons. as I outline in this article. It is even better, more inspiring, more engaging when they see their fellow country men/women singing in English! So in this spirit, let's share some of our favorite international artists singing in their second language!  Get the full player and lyric book HERE

Here's a brave singer from Korea, to start off this directory!

Today, I get to highlight a group from where I'm presently working - Korea.

BIG BANG is a huge group here and have a cult following. Even better, their English songs are wonderful. Crisp pronunciation and they sound like native speakers! (many of the members lived in America). Here is the English version of
Always. I played this for many foreign teachers at a large lecture I gave and they just loved the language.... :)

Here's the real video and also the karaoke version I produced.

This is just for fun, ok? This song is called 'Anak Ayam' by Too Phat from Malaysia. The background music is actually a popular folk song tune.

Hope you like it :)

This is another of Too Phat's famous songs in Malaysia. It's an interesting blend of hip-hop & spiritual music. Have a listen!

Alhamdulillah by Too Phat (feat. Yasin)

Chorus
Ult li albi bissaraha (I'm opening up my heart with honesty)
Hayya nab'idil karaha (Let's avoid the hated and hatred)
Syakkireena a' kulli ni'ma (Let's remain thankful with what we have)
Ba' ideena anil fattana (Let's avoid all lies and sins)

Verse 1
I feel the heat
From these 4 candles burning
As I'm staring out the window
In solitude I look at life
From different angles
Thoughts strangled
My mind is suffocatin'
In this truth quest
A greed law
That we abide by is ruthless
Enough will never satisfy
Until we toothless
Filthy millionaires
Are gamblin' until they muflis
A sad fact of life
But mankind approved this
I gotta call Him
Sajadah is where the booth is
I'll make it clear that
I ain't even tryin' to preach here
By sharing thoughts I hope
To find a little peace here
I thank Allah for blessing me
To be creative
So here's a diss for me
For bein' unappreciative
Wanted a perfect life
Yeah smile then die old
Fame, money, women
Phat cribos and white gold
Drive my own Beemer
Before I hit two six
A straight pink bitin' toothpicks
Who walk around town wit' two chicks
And doin' new hits to woo tricks....
Now that's wrong
Pleasure from partyin'
And bull ish don't last long
A lotta yuppies sneakin'
Cars out when dad's gone
Crackin' bottles in clubs
Frontin' designer fashion
But I ain't about
To trade happiness for a Jag
So stop smilin' with your ragtop down
Cause for a fact
I don't care about your money
Or how slick your car
'Cause no matter how rich and big you are
It's still Allahuakbar...

Verse 2
I know that all this
Ain't the right thing
Partying, chasing moneys
And material things
Flying high
Think nobody gonna
Clip my wings
I'm lying to myself
Knowing that
I've been neglecting
Responsibilities
As a healthy Muslim
Riches and loot
Ain't nothing
We frontin'
Diamonds and scrilla
But forget to say
Alhamdulillah
Made my album a killer
Plan B
Now 2-3 droppin'
And I wish to
Ask for forgiveness
Your guidance
Protection and strength
For humbleness and faith
To make me a better man
Success in foreign lands
Never dreamt of that
I remember being 18
When we started Too Phat
Now let's go back
Three years before that
Sometimes I forget
Me and my parents
Took a trip with granddad
I remember '95
While performing Umrah
Made my wish in Mecca
Right in front the Kaabah
Dear God
You made it possible
When facing obstacles
Please let me do good
Before I pass on
In the hospital
And keep reciting
The Testimony of Faith
And find the right way
Out of this life's maze

Verse 3
Ay yo…
Two candles go out
That's when
I feel the wind blow
I haven't met Fatim
For two years
Been livin' like I'm single
Evaluatin' all the friendships
Relationship
The reason it's the tenth year
Is 'cause she's a patient chick
And as far as friends are concerned
Many I've had it all
From those who cried for my pain
To those who plotted my fall
I learned to differentiate
Fakes from the great
Mates from the snakes
Apes wanna beef
Hate's all it takes
For me to blow
A diss song for you
Not even worthy
As an album filler
So now it's smiles
And Alhamdulillah
Yeah, love me
Or hate me
This who I am
Look at the past at times
I wish that I was born again
So I can rectify mistakes
And my wrong doings
Attempts on minimizing my sins
Before my story ends
I ain't no Eddie Murphy
Tryin' to sound as a holy man
But if I tried to be a better person
Now I prolly can
(Wait...)
Who am I to advise you
I ain't been the best
Of God's slaves
Just a poet writin'
What my thought says
A little house
A little car
A little sweet girl
Thank you Lord
I'll try to slow it down
On the cheap thrills
This song will prolly stir
A little controversy
At least I ain't be rappin'
Bout the stuff
As tho' I'm born in Jersey
Stage name is Malique
And lost name is Cairel
Mama told me
Stop complaining too much,
So I will...

Jason Lo, I believe, paved the way for many Malaysian singers & song-writers to sing in English. This song, although almost a decade old is still a good song to listen to. Enjoy!

Operator, The Line Is Dead
by Jason Lo

I guess i never wanted this
Another 'ever after' kiss... Oh
Operator, the line is dead
Oh no, it's only me and all the walls inside my head

And for the record I was lost
With only one road I could never cross
And that's the road that takes me here
Oh no, not again
This is where it started

I need you, I'm for you
You threw me, I caught you
Don't leave me and say that you want to find a way back
Believe me, I followed all you said... Oh
Operator, the line is dead

How come you never look away
Everybody bought but I paid
You're not the one who left me here
Oh no, that was me and all the things I wanted

But now I find you different
You broke up all the walls in my head
Please don't go, let me

Need you, I want you
You know that I found you
Don't leave me and say that you want to find a way back
Believe me, I followed all you said... Oh
Operator, the line is dead

I guess i never wanted this
Another 'ever after' kiss... Oh
Operator, the line is dead
Oh no, it's only me and all the walls inside my head

I need you, I'm for you
You threw me, I caught you
Don't leave me and say that you want to find a way back
Believe me, I followed all you said... Oh
Operator, the line is dead

I need you, I'm for you (All you've said)
You threw me, I caught you (All you've said)
Don't leave me and say that you want
to find a way back (All you said)
Believe me, I followed all you said... Oh
Operator, the line is dead

So Julie by Jason Lo

Imagine you're at a supermarket & you're minding your own business when suddenly someone catches your eye. Have you ever been in that situation? What goes on in your mind? Could he or she be your soulmate? Watch how Jason Lo toys with that idea in this video clip.

Evening News by Jason Lo

Well good morning, good evening or good afternoon
Wherever you are and whatever you do
A lot of things happening in the world today
Most of them far beyond our control you might say
Perhaps its time we took a pause
And thought about life
And thought about the laws of gravity
And sexuality and humanity
Don't touch that dial
Just try and hear me out for a while

You
I broke you
It's not true
I've been you
I've been on the evening

[Chorus}
You
I broke you
It's not true
That I've been used
I've been on the evening news

You've been way too hard
Now I'm a mess
I think we only need one channel less

Could you turn me up please?
Could you turn me up?
That's right

You've been way too hard
Now I'm a mess
I think we only need one channel less
You've been way too hard
Now I'm a mess
I think we only need
I think we only

[Chorus]
Break prime time with surprise and lies
You're signed and sealed
With what you see with anybody else's eyes
You're talking the talk
But you ain't walking the walk man
One mike, one camera
And you become an educator
Can I trust you with my own
Give me time to believe
Those with too much power they fall down in history
Yea you might have us hanging onto your every breath
So be responsible
Learn to preserve, protect and respect
Not to destroy
Not to deplore
The angles of truth are so much harder to explore
And living your life is about waiting for the next test
So live for the moment
Cos it never turns out like you expect

[Chorus]
We'll be right back
After this

[Chorus]
Well that's all the time we have
Thanks for watching

Seven Collar T-shirt one of the most popular indie bands in Malaysia. I can't say much about this video clip but I love the song. :P

Faith by Seven Collar T-shirt

Take a walk I'll hold your hands for now
It's happening, it's happening
Makes it hard to lose another night

I'll pretend that I'm a man for now
It's difficult, it's difficult
To soothe a wounded heart

Before you go, give me all of your love
Before you go, I'll give you all of mine

I'll drink water because my blood has dried
It's different, it's different
Than anything you've seen or heard before

Take a picture, hold that smile forever
I'll drink it everyday till it becomes another skin

Before you go, give me all of your love
Before you go, I'll give you all of mine

If it makes it easier
If it makes it easier to breathe

Fading away
Faith is a friend
You make it or break it

Fading away
Faith is a friend
You make it or break it

If it makes it easier
If it makes it easier
Wish it could be easier
I can't breathe
If it makes it easier
If it makes it easier to breathe

Fading away
Faith is a friend
You make it or break it

Fading away
Faith is a friend
You make it or break it
Today we have "Afro Funk" or as one critic also called it, "Afro Melange...". Bibi Tanga is Ethiopian/French and sings in English. He really puts some vibs together and I was just rocked by this inspiring song - It's the Earth That Moves. A great video and you might get your students dancing with this one. It even celebrates Earth Day! From Ellen's recommended site - the National Geographic World Music site....

Today's song is from Mother Russia. Can't say enough about the uniqueness of the slavic soul. This group TATU, really is endemic of a new kind of artist, thrown together to appeal to pop teenagers, whatever the country. However, TATU is Russian as you can see from the interview. Here's "All the Things She Said".

Lady Blacksmith Mombasa is the "gem" of S. Africa. A Zulu group, they epitomize the "power' of music to transcend skin color, religion, nationality, gender. This is my fav. from them and it rules! - from the Nobel Peace Concert.

Someone That Cannot Love by the Portuguese singer and song writer David Fonseca.
Lyrics:
You locked your heart
You wake up with tears and
stars in your eyes
You gave it all to someone that
Cannot love you back

Your days are packed
With wishes and hopes for the
love that you've got
You waste it all to someone that
Cannot love you back

Someone that cannot love

Love, ain't this enough?
You push yourself down
You try to take comfort in words
But words
They cannot love
Don't waste them like that
Cus they'll bruise you more

You secretly made
Castles of sand that you
[ Find more Lyrics on www.mp3lyrics.org/Iku ]
hide in the shade
But you cannot own the
tides that break them
And you build them all over again

You talk all these words
You make conversations
that cannot be heard
How long until you notice that
No one is answering back

Someone that cannot love

Love, aint this enough?
You push yourself down
You try to take comfort in words
But words
They cannot love
Don't waste them like that
Cus they'll bruise you more

Love, love, ain't this enough
This pushing around
To find little comfort in words
But words
They cannot love
Don't waste them like that
Cus they'll bruise you more

You know they'll bruise you more
Words they will hurt you more

Octavio, I'll have to check him out!

Today, here's one of Chile's biggest , biggest bands ever. La Ley. I'm sure it will bring back memories to someone here on EFL Classroom 2.0.Grammy award winners - "The Law" are a bit "dark" but they have legions of fans in Latin America.

Step inside The Corridor
Feel your soul invade your senses
Spirits at the gates of winter
Ready for the season's countdown
So it goes, the gate is open
All your past remains in silence
But your future is unsure
You plan to go away
Never thought that your mind was away
Never threw away your wantings
Never kept you by my side
Now you belong, you're obviously mine
Jinny count down, Jinny count down
Close your desires or burn them with fire
Jinny count down, Jinny count down
And feel me...
Seven strangers on your door
Feeling like you were behind them
Listen to, wide handded knocks
Emission of the sound of wisdom
So it goes the door is open
All your past remains in silence
Now your future is for sure
A plan to go away
A plan to go away...
Never thought that your mind was away
Never threw away your wantings
Never kept you by my side
Now you belong, you're obviously mine
Jinny count down, Jinny count down
Close your desires or burn them with fire
Always dreaming, always screaming
Close your eyes
And feel me...
