Surviving as a Teacher

Slide6 Today, went out for a nice bike ride with "my old man". He's almost 70 and he kicked my butt! Truly. I'll admit I'm not in great shape anymore but watching my dad, "power in" the last 20 k of our ride, me lagging behind - gave me pause. The guy just doesn't age and "keeps going". I hope I'll be so lucky. But as a metaphor, it got me thinking about what it takes to stay teaching, as I huffed and puffed along…

Corkboard

Corkboard is another writing/posting tool that is very simple and note based - like Wallwisher.

So simple in fact it might be too simple!  But the simplicity can only be a foreshadow of great things to come. Just click and leave a note. Share the…

Our video players (fixed and referenced)

I have tried my mightiest to keep up with all the API and video player changes that happen in the netiverse. Of late, I've been behind the times but today spent a good 6 hours and got all our players correct, functioning and without Youtube ads (my big reasons for doing this, beyond the power of "collecting" and…

Learning English through translation

Luis Von Ahn of Captcha / ReCaptcha fame, talks about his new crowdsourcing start up - Duolingo. (here's the N.Y. Times article I tweeted previously) He envisions harnessing the large "desire" to learn English which exists, proposing a model whereby learners don't pay but rather get paid for learning English.

How? Well, by translating the web.

I'm… Continue

My favorite graduation speech

It's that time of year - graduation! Full of commencement addresses and speeches. I've got to give my share and I'm always reminded of this time of year by the traffic level hitting this one post; Graduation Speech.

For those who haven't seen it, I'd like to share one of the finest (and funniest) graduation speeches - Bill Cosby speaking to new Carnegie Mellon graduates. He tells a special… Continue

Teaching with only a blank piece of paper

Blank Piece of Paper  [now view this as a Top 50 list]

Even now, this late in the day, a blank sheet of paper holds the greatest excitement there is for me — more promising than a silver cloud, and prettier than a red wagon. - E.B.…

Curriki

Curriki.org is a wonderful endeavour. It is a place where teachers can share resources and bypass the big monopolization of "content" which many large

publishers hold. I"ve been a member for awhile but haven't looked at the Foreign language directory for a few months. Since then it has grown substantially and I'm thinking of putting our own EFL Classroom 2.0 materials there. Join, click on our pic! and see…

Kinetic Typography for Teaching English

kinetic-text The last 3 weeks, when I could spare a moment, I've been learning how to make a Kinetic Typography style video.   I think this technology offers great "power" for contextualizing and presenting language for learners.   For a long number of years - I've been…

Using Technology to Teach Speaking

I recorded my talk at the recent KOTESOL National Conference - Getting Students Speaking: Harnessing the Power of New Technologies.

It's a pretty comprehensive overview of online tools and technologies. Here's the presentation of only the websites (click the images to go to that website).

Thanks to Aaron and all the hard working Kotesol…

More Than Words

I've been noticing more and more (pun intended), teachers and especially those acknowledged as "leaders", sharing sites where learners learn "words". These sites usually involve games or tools that allow the user to have fun with words.

These can be useful, just like the odd game of hangman in the classroom. However, I think it encumbent on those listing these sites, to also remind teachers that teaching "words" IS NOT teaching language. Language is MORE than words. It isn't as… Continue

Old vs "New" Technologies

fridge My sister just threw out her 25 year old fridge. Time for a new one. Time for the new and out with the old (my poor niece is suffering!).

Technology is not a recent thing. Nor are the "rapid" changes we are experiencing. (and see my remix presentation of educational technology through the…

The importance of an online curator

museum I am a proud curator. Very proud. Making music from the noise out there.

to cure: to make better.

curator: someone who makes things better.

So yep, I'm pleased to call myself a curator. Really will begin calling myself this rather than "aggregator" (sounds too mechanical, like "terminator"). Curation is an act of love, by someone who loves. It is personal and… Continue

Learning 3.0

I call what Alan November advocates, "Learning 3.0".

It is about giving students the space and tools to make their learning relevant to the world. REALLY relevant and actual. Make them active in the community, bring them alive to their potential.

THIS is schooling, learning, education and…
