Being a "Fit" Teacher

In a previous post, I talked about my latest brainstorm - a treadmill desk.

Well, I got my new treadmill several days ago and have started in earnest. No more computer time unless I'm walking away! I've been averaging 10+ km a day, moving at 1.7-2 kph. I can do everything anyone else can. Been skyping and colleagues and students… Continue

Assembly Line Education

As this video suggests, we have to get out of the "assembly line" approach to education. It isn't easy, we are addicted to quantifying "learning". We are addicted to "cosmetic tinkering". We are addicted to the "herding" of children into rooms. We are infact scared of the truth.  (see John Taylor Gatto for a whole plethora of info. on the history of the assembly line education… Continue

Education lesson

Hi,

I've just made a new lesson about the problems/future of education on my blog. You can use it in your class if you've got internet connection:

I've also done one about the longer working week:

EnglishCentral: Previewing Changes Part II

This continues the first post about forthcoming changes to EnglishCentral - the website that gets students motivated through authentic video and speaking.

EnglishCentral I must admit, is slowly becoming a powerful "video corpus". Imagine taming the unruly thing that is youtube so that it might be easily… Continue

A call for Public Education Intervention

Public health intervention more than any other "science" has done more for humankind than anything else over the last 200 years. Forget industrialization, forget inventions - how we live in abundance and health is most definitely related to the things put into place by public health: sanitation, universal medical treatments like vaccination, pre/post natal care, medical screening, public safety measures and so much more.....

I find it curious that we don't have "public…

The #1.... Video all language teachers should watch

A Birth, A Death, Some Regrets

VID00017 A patchwork and "raw" post. It has been one of those weeks. Today, held in my arms for the first time, my niece's son - Riley. Couldn't have been happier. Tomorrow, heading to my coach's funeral. He died tragically this weekend. Life shines and life sucks.

Mr. Z was an amazing coach. I wouldn't be who I am today without his guidance and motivation - he's a part of that and in a strange way, lives… Continue

Why Do I Learn?

there-is-no-finish-line To be very frank - I've been going through a rough patch. Can't run anymore, feeling half my normal self. Just not up to things and just not sparking as I always was.

I've been reading, as I do when I step back in order to jump ahead. Came across an old essay I laminated, by George Sheehan about running. I'd look at it day in and day out over the years and it always gave me… Continue

The Idiot's Dictionary

The Idiot's Dictionary Finally for the moment, finished with this project - The Idiot's Dictionary. However, dictionaries, like poems, are never finished, merely abandoned.....

Enjoy - read online in my Wattpad library

If you really get into it - think of purchasing the hard cover. But I'll warn you, they are tough. Think… Continue

Guessing Games

A short post about a very BIG topic - Guessing. Along with prediction, it is a very important skill in any English teachers arsenal and one that can be used with great effectiveness.

Last night, was visiting this amazing site - Children's Books Online: The Rosetta Project (to make a literary book I'm working on) I couldn't help putting some things from it together to make… Continue

Busy as a Beaver

beavers We have so many "hypothesis" about second language learning. I've commented on this before.

Today, just a shout out to the one thing I know that works for all. Not an hypothesis but a fact, - being busy. It's all about just keeping at it. It's all about day in and day out. That goes for teachers too.… Continue

The Future of the "tech" book

digital-textbook-282x300 The past few weeks, I've been mulling over the future of "the book". In particular, the textbook and even more precisely the ELT textbook.

Probably been thinking about this because I'm busy every day making books (and I use "make" deliberately - authors these days can "make" books and not just write them). Further prompted by the recent announcement that… Continue

Continue

The Blank Dialogue Refreshed

The blank dialogue is a very "natural" teaching approach. Something intuitive about it. I used it in my early days of teaching - just pausing a dialogue on cassette tape and asking students to respond. You had to get skilled with using those big buttons! That is what being a teckkie used to entail!

Most blank dialogues are receptive - students listen and fill in. Then repeat the…
