Featured Resource: Rubrics

Rubrics, especially when made and negotiated with students, really help the assessment process. They clarify in simple language for students, how they will be graded and what their grade represents.

I designed this …

Dogme Revisited

This morning, sat down and had some "my time".  Went through a number of my hundreds of notebooks full of philosophy, essays, poems that I've been collecting over 4 decades.  A lot of stuff buried in these books but was surprised to pull open about 50 pages on film. Don't even remember writing this but it was fascinating. One part was on Dogme, when it was a new approach to film making in the 90s.

It…

Featured Resource: Student made Wordfinds

I'm a big proponent of SCC - Student Created Content (my own term). It is an approach where students create the content, the materials by which they'll practice their language skills. It immediately clears up the gap between their world and the materials presented for language study - a huge problem that faces teachers. Read more about it in the forward to my free SCC coursebook …

Featured Resource: Weather and Clothing

This video is stellar and a great jumping off point for a full lesson and vocabulary building around clothing and the weather.

I also teach clothing with a focus on the body. Matching and item of clothing with a part of the body.

Featured Resource: Conversation Questions

Communicative Competence (CC) is the core of modern language learning theory. We learn language by actively, functionally using it and communicating our meaning so that others know what we mean. It is a very "deep" process which can be directed and guided through set conversation questions/prompts.

We have …

Featured Resource: The Little Mole (adapted play)

This story is great and even better is the play adaptation (I got creative and made it simple for students).

It is very repetitive and perfect for young learners. Doesn't get a lot of traction here - so…

Is School Necessary?

This "must watch" video (which I'll get to in a moment) comes at an opportune time for me. I've spent the summer in a bit of a cloud. You see, I've been struggling more and more with my own complicity in a system that I'm…

Featured Resource: Words

The amazing video WORDS is one of the most used resources on the community.  The video by Radio Labs is captivating and perfect for language instruction. It teaches students the meta skill of "language awareness", something very important for all language learners (and part of the realm of "noticing" that allows learners to become self - directed learners).

The video has sets of…

Behavior Management Tool

Most of the teachers quit their job because of trouble-maker  students and noise level in  the classroom. As a teacher , I have tried many ways to make my classes quiter.

One of the methods I implemented in my classes.

Last year with my 3rd graders ,I used a method based on tickets. Each student has 3 tickets. In an  inappropriate behavior like  talking without raising hands or…

Buzzword Bingo is a  "game" that works well for lectures or presentations but equally can be adapted by the well prepared classroom teacher.

It's a simple concept.  Each student gets a card with prepared words in a Bingo grid.  As the lesson proceeds, students have to listen carefully and when they hear a…

Teaching vocabulary can sometimes be trying. Mostly because it involves a lot of "new" stuff for students and a lot of slogging through, a lot of hard work on the part of the learner.  This game I made, helps make it more engaging.
