The Captive Mind - Richard Stallman

I've written quite a bit here about copyright and control of knowledge through larger entities. One place to start is my "Captive Mind" series.  My attempt to publish my own previously published work and to stop institutions from having for perpetuity, control over knowledge.

Finally, some good news on this front. Princeton…

Only in humbleness, our elders have told and told and told us...

I'm a day late and a dollar short, but there was one column commemorating the anniversary of 9/11 that caught me, and I thought I'd share it. Seemed to speak to me of life. It's written by a long-time columnist for The Asian Reporter, a Portland, Oregon weekly newspaper. His name is Polo, the name of the column is Talking Story in Asian America.

Here's an excerpt, see the full column by clicking on the image below:

Letter To Self

I just got home after an absolutely stunning fall day with my preservice teachers class - Education and Schooling.

This year, I'm again using an old trick I learned from the amazing Benjamin Zander. I'm getting them to write letters to themselves. They write a letter to themselves, saying why they got an A in the class. They write about who they will be after a year in class. I give them an…

Free TEFL Course

I've long had the idea that there should be a very basic, low cost, online course for TESOL. For teachers around the world who need to think again about their teaching or especially for new teachers heading abroad without much idea of how to teach English.

So I did it. Here's the introduction to the FREE course. 14…

Teachers at war against cuts in Public Education (Madrid)

Teachers to strike in Madrid over stuffing cuts. This is an outrageous attack on public secondary education.

Secondary and vocational training teachers at 400 schools will go on strike Sept. 20, 21 and 22. The regional government, run by the conservative Popular Party,  has ordered that teachers give two extra hours of class per week because temporary hiring is being cut back. The bare truth is that without the thousands of temporary teachers who are normally hired each year, some…

Reflections On Being A Teacher

I’m sitting in one of these chairs, in “god’s country”, lakes and rocks and trees, trees, lakes, rocks, rocks, rocks, lakes, trees, trees, no people.  Divine. My last few days before beginning a return to the classroom.

I’ve spent the evening, refreshed by the lapping of the lake and solitude of nature,  reading “…

My Romantic Boy

Tim, my youngest, went back to University last week for his final year. He sent me this poem today, that he wrote for his poetry class. He told me it's a Shakespearean sonnet (4 quatrains and a couplet at the end). Good thing he mentioned that, as I wouldn't have known :)

"Words I Never Said"

Staring through this window pane,

in a corner of the room.

In this scheduled monotony of life,

all I see is you.

Sport and Language Learning

I've been an athlete most of my life. Also a coach and one who's thought a lot about how to "develop" one's talent as an athlete.

This has served me well as a language teacher. Becoming proficient or even excelling at a sport bears most of the same developmental patterns that one should step through to become proficient in a language. There are no short cuts!…
