Sugata Mitra and Minimally Invasive Teaching

"The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say,
"the children are working as if I don't exist."

- Maria Montessori

During the last year, I've been following the KhanAcademy locomotive as it chugs on to distant fertile lands and glory.   I'm a big believer of video and its revolutionary…

Sugata Mitra: The Ignorant School Teacher?

There has been a lot of debate about the  ideas of Sugata Mitra after his recent plenary at IATEFL. Find a nice summary of these posts / discussions through this post.

I'm kind of confused by all the…

10 Things Project

Getting students thinking and harnessing their own inner curiosity through question based instruction – is a great approach.  Or also Project Based Instruction.  The more we educators can harness the inner light and motivation of students, tap into their thirst to know - the more we'll succeed.

Sometimes like …

The Future of Learning

sugatamitri I have written and pounded the pulpit long and hard on the issue of teachers "getting out of the way". Ranted and pleaded with teachers to be more inductive in their approach, more sandbox about the learning environment.

No greater compliment to my own constructivist and technology enabled vision can I find than Sugata Mitra. He's a wonder and I've been writing… Continue

Low Impact Teaching

Over the last 5 to 10 years, I've been developing new ideas about how we should be teaching in our classrooms.   These ideas have changed as the possibilities and promises of educational technology have become reality.

The most fundamental of these ideas are always revolving around learning and the student. The possibility to differentiate and deliver personlized study to students is the most…

Learning as a Self Organizing (natural) principle

One thing I've become convinced of as a teacher, is the fact that WE can be our own worst enemy. Meaning, somehow our own experiences, our 1,000s of hours in the classroom observing teachers, have conditioned us to "be teachers" and that this gets in the way of the success of our language classrooms. We believe we are already experts and we then, self - perpetuate old attitudes/styles/paradigms. We play the role without thought to the… Continue

Making School so it doesn't Stink

My blog is something I put a lot of myself into. A way I have a conversation with myself as much as with you the reader. It is organic and natural.

As I look over the last year and 250 + posts, I see one very important theme emerging like a crooked stem off the trunk. That theme is student autonomy. Giving…

An Open Door Policy For Schools

The one thing I have always wished about school - that it was a marketplace of ideas/learning where all in the community could come and go as they please. A doors open, windows blowing fresh air through policy.

This is far from how it works. Going to school is mandatory for students, a criminal sentence. Many or most parents have to book an appointment to go to their child's classroom. Invite guests into your classroom? Be prepared for reams of paperwork and forms to be approved.…

Giving students room to do their own thing

"but I gave them the room to just do the thing. Figure it out, go create" - Diana Laufenberg

One of the things I've often done with teachers and students alike is just give them a set of materials, say flashcards and then, "just get out of the way". Let them decide how to use them and let the…
