What is your philosophy of education?

I 've enjoyed teaching this part of my Education and Schooling course to prospective teachers and so thought I'd share some of the course material with colleagues.

Here is a nice presentation outlining 5 of the most broad philosophies of education and some information about educational philosophies.…

The #1 reason to use tech when teaching

Number One ** Not your ordinary, endless list - just what's number 1.

                              Differentiation

I have thought about this long and hard. I'm not a big proponent of using "tech for tech's sake" or just because it is there and students like it. I sympathize with the argument that…

It's About The Learning NOT the Teaching

I would like to share one of the ideas that most invigorates and informs me as a teacher. The idea of "Student Created Content" or SCC. I borrow the term from UGC or UCC, "user generated/created content" that is the motor of Web 2.0 and the internet.

What is SCC?

It is an approach that tries to simplify the teaching/learning process and equalize the power relationship that exists between…

Your Teaching Journey

A bit of a reflective post today while I pack and go to TESOL Toronto. Looking forward to seeing many "teaching friends". it's put me in a contemplative mood, about my journey as an educator. About saying who we are as teachers and shining that light into the dark to lead others.

One of the invaluable things a teacher can do is pass on the torch, to help the next…

What teaching gives me

So often in teaching, we get caught up in ourselves. What we do and what we contribute. Me, me, me, us, us, us. However, it is often the case that once we get some distance, we see how much our students have given us. How much they've made us grow and learn. It is this oft neglected theme I'd like to comment on today.

I had the pleasure to be a LINC teacher in Canada for a number of years. LINC is short for "Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada" and it is a…

Faking it

Today, my "much better half" insisted that our dog Chico could understand Korean. She showed me how he could understand Korean and sit and stay, even give paw. I had a good chuckle.

Not much different to many teachers who believe their students understand them in the classroom! Chico, like so many students, was great at "faking it". Doing the right thing for the wrong reason.…

Teacher Burnout / Stress

One of my goals this coming school year is to be more personal in my writing/blogging. I know I am guilty of sharing precious little about myself. I pontificate, philosophize, condemn, encourage but in that, I share little of "who I am". I don't want to be that kind of writer, blogger or secret sharer. So here…

Teachers? Who needs them?

I've always, my whole life long, had the sneaking suspicion that adults really didn't know much and were just as scared as us kids and as frightfully "groping". My suspicions were confirmed as I reached adulthood and realized that adults don't "know it all", nor possess some magical "togetherness".

Same…

How I learned to teach English to non-English speaking students

Starting out in any profession is tough. When you have no formal training, are in a new country that doesn’t speak your language and are suddenly before a classroom of fresh-faced youngsters, things suddenly take on a much more sinister haze.

Georgia McCann, a fresh arts graduate with no…

So You Want To Be A Teacher?

I threw this together pretty quickly (will remake better when I get time) but was reminded about it when thinking about how important "all in" is when learning. How important it is to shut off our conscious mind and let things in.

When learning, we learn more if we don't try, don't have our conscious mindkeeper on. (see this article).  Same goes for teaching, we are better teachers when we…
