Hmmm...

I have to admit that I don't know how I feel about this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYZrho7Th68&playnext_from=TL&videos=PgF5gJHUbVY&feature=sub

This may be too unstructured for me, but TYT doesn't treat the idea of freeing up education a fair shake. I still point back to Daniel Quinn's model for decentralized…

Teaching in Ancient Rome

This weeks History of Rome Podcast tells us a little bit about what it might have been like teaching or studying in Ancient. And I thought the Korean education system was rough on its students...

I also bought this hilarious poster about the proper way to to use a semicolon for my office; I got it from… Continue

The New Gig

Most of what I have been teaching the first to weeks if required freshmen English classes. We are using interchange text books.

My classes are organized by major. This means that they vary quite a bit as some majors have low values on learning English, like my Phys ED class. But to my surprise it was my buddism class that is the biggest headache. Its filled with older Koreans who have decided that they cant speak English. Most of the lesson revolves around them forcing the only… Continue

New Job

Its funny how things work in Korea. Things never seem to pan out how you expect them too. The reason I have been AWOL lately is because I have changed jobs here in Korea. Quite unexpectedly I went from working in the EPIK program at a middle school in Pohang to teaching at a university just outside of Pohang.

With the new job came a new apartment, my own office, and lots of paperwork. Not to meantion all of this happened with my trip to the US in the middle.

So EPIK… Continue

EPIK Justino Lives!

Still around, just been lurking as of late. For the last couple of months I haven't refused a night class or English Camp that has come my way. Signed a new contract with EPIK for a third year. This time around I will be only working at one middle school.

I have a speaking engagement at a university in Daegu next week where I will be sharing my lessons with about 100 teachers. I have never spoken in front of that many Koreans before. The fact that I do not like speaking in public… Continue

Teacher in Trouble in Seoul

Teacher Matt Robinson is in dire need of surgery which could save his leg and his life. Matt has been in a Korean hospital for over a month and the hospital is refusing to give him life saving surgery that would save his leg unless he is able to prove that he can pay for it. Doctors and hospital staff have refused to tell him the cost of the surgery but it is estimated to cost about 10 million won. The expat community is pulling together to provide assistance. If you can donate even as little s… Continue

Daniel Quinn's Providence

Daniel Quinn's book Ishmael was the most influencial book on my life. So I finally got around to reading his autobiography, Providence. Chapter 10 has quite a bit to say about education and I thought I might share some of it here.

"Of course there'd be room here for a lot more. Maybe a small zoo where you could learn to take care of the animals yourself. Maybe somebody would have a pretty good teoescope and could show you what's what in the nighttime sky and lend you some… Continue

Big Snit hit a Big Wall

So I used the Big Snit video and it was working its magic until I got to the part where students retell the story. That were the excitement and motivation hit a Big Wall. It ended with only two of the best girl being the only ones to offer anything and the rest of the students staring at the clock or falling asleep.

So here is my question: Those of you who have taught this before, how to you organize the part where students retell the story with picture prompts and keep their… Continue

Kidz With Cake Comic Project

We made comics in my advanced class last week. I actually got a good laugh from this one that my students posted in his blog. You can make your own at Makebeliefscomix.com.…

Additional Materials for the Big Snit Lesson

I made these creud materials for Dave's Big Snit Lesson. I put togather to worksheets: One for Nouns and one for Verbs. I have found that putting even basic worksheets in front of students work better (and faster) and asking them to write down three things that make them angry on a blank sheet of paper. I also put togather a slideshow of funny pictures for talking… Continue

New Amazon Purchase

I just found out that Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) just release a solo album this year. It was a bit of a shock, as Conor has been writing songs and playing in various bands since being a teenagers, that he had not already release a solo album.

I often call him the new Bob Dylan for his song writing and brazen Americana feel to much of his music. He is a very versatile artist and I would recommend giving him a… Continue

What Is It Korea

I cannibalized Dave's Who Is It Korea file and essentially made a work sheet for the password game. The Students seem to like it. I thought I might share it here.WHATISITKorea.doc

Gender and Age Bias in NET Hiring Practices

I stumbled across this study that looked at Korean bias in hiring practices of foriegn teachers in regards to age and gender. It is well done I am highly suggest taking a look.

First we see that Koreans prefer women over men. It took me a while to figure out why and then I remembered something form my Political… Continue

Kidz With Cake

I have been a busy bee as of late. I have had to put in a lot of overtime to make up for the exchange rate. Fortunately these extra-cirricular classes have allowed me to get the students into a computer lab. The result is a Ning site that I prepared for my students call Kidz With Cake.

So far the experience has allowed me to take a closer look at ning and I am getting results. The students take to it very naturally as they are already doing… Continue

No Thank You to Korean Education

So my coworkers have been a buzz about Barrack Obama's recent comment that claimed that "Korean students are in school a month longer than American students. Koreans seem to find this as a vindication of the hours and hours of studying and the grueling and competitive regime of tests that they have to go through to get into one of three universities that Koreans consider worth a damned.

Today it dawned… Continue

Mak Your Own Trading Cards! Fun!

This site is a blast! It takes me back to the old days when I still had time for Collectable Card Games. If I could get my students in front of a computer, this could make for a fun lesson. Anyways, this weeks EPIK Justino challenge is to make your own cards and put them up in your own blog. Have fun with it!…

Two Steps Forward, Three Step Backwards

During my first semester at Changpo the decision makers got the dimwitted idea that the best thing to do with a Native English Teacher was to schedule him to teacher every single class in every single grade during the semester. This means that I would see all 36 classes of 7th-9th graders 2 or 3 times a semester. Because this was a waste of time this was quickly changed when some new teachers who gave a damn showed up last March. Instead I would teach only first graders so I could have an… Continue

Semester 4, Philippines, and Learning ANOTHER Language

I concluded a dive trip to the Philippines about two weeks ago. I had a blast. We spent a week in Moalboal wher eI experienced the best diving of my life. The following week we spent in Boracay which was much more my friends style but I found a quiet area that suited me. The only trouble with The Philippines was that is was not friendly to backpackers. Much of what we encountered was taylored to couples or lecherous old European guys.

Got myself a nice tan and a new tattoo. Most of… Continue

The Death of Mixwit, Daegu Billibowl, and I Can Has Subnotebook?

Mixwit is shutting down. When I heard it from the horse's mouth on their blog I was bummed. There are quite a few other virtual mixtape sites out there, but I have grown fond of mixwit after winning the mixtape contest. It is unlikely that EPIK songs of the week will continue as it looks like Muxtape has also shut down. Muxtape is open about how its shutdown is the direct… Continue
