Translation Tools - oddcast and google

Today's ELT chat was about using translation in the classroom. I joined in late but the tweeting reminded me of two very "solid" automated translation tools for students and teachers.

1.  The Oddcast Translation bot

Limited to 250 characters, it is still very powerful. Type in the L1 language and then have it read out loud in English. Even choose the accent! This really works well for pronunciation practice in lieu of authentic models.

2. Google translated chat.

You chat with another person. Both of you type in different languages but the chat will appear in the language you set (in this case English). You can have a very fluent conversation while both speaking different languages and having the language translated! I've incorporated this in the new video conference rooms I'll be offering - it really works great. Here's a pic of how it will look. If you want to do it yourself - you have to download the chat bot specific for the language you want translated.

Just two nice translation tools at your fingertips. Google really is the leader in translation and for just straight text translation - nothing beats their translator.
