Basic Activities / Books / Materials for teaching Elementary Students

I do a lot of presentations and workshops on this topic and thought it would be nice to have "one place" to discuss and get materials which might help us elementary school teachers. Please find other resources here and in the Activities folder. Most importantly, also on the Elementary Page at EFL Classroom 2.0.
Super Simple Songs and Mr. Bean video players are excellent sources of video material (besides all the great videos in our A/V player - see especially "The Elephant Song" and "Hey Jude Kid" and "Lily"!!!!).

Now it is your turn to add your own materials here - help other elementary teachers!

Here are the role playing cards that can be used. Great for a daily interview to have a routine to start the class.

This game - not like the other things, is really cool and can be used with intermediate level elementary school students.

Here is another more theory based ppt I used in a recent lecture. Some good info. here about teaching children.

I also highly recommend David Paul's book - Teaching English to Children in Asia. Here's an excerpt of games he recommends, but buy this invaluable book. I also recommend Tell me More by Andrew Finch - go HERE to get all his fine books.

Graphic organizers are essential for teaching young learners - here are a pile of them! Also some handy activity books...

These pop up cars are great crafts to use with elementary school learners.

As well - Top 5 is an excellent game I created for practicing and reinforcing vocabulary. Use the worksheet with it... Get many more ppt games in our PPT games area.

I think this is an important resource, especially for ESL students in the regular classroom. I hope it doesn't get lost in the shuffle! I listed it as my resource of the month (ok, it's the first month I've called anything that, but still...) at Portland Free School... where most of the activities & resources are accessible to ESL students : )

19+ issues of

National Geographic Young Explorer

Read (in full) aloud; Plus teaching guides!

So cute, B is for Bluebird! Print out the card and have kids put the cards in order, or print out 2 cards and play memory with the cards!

When put in the correct order, the cards spell out, "Build a nest!"

There is also a Fact Sheet to accompany the cards/activity

This free workbook is chalk full of worksheets that elementary teachers can use. Lots for handwriting/printing but many others too. Perfect for ESL (though originally for lower grades regular classes).
