These grammar poems are great for getting students to practice vocabulary, write and present.

First do one on the board together for whatever topic. Then distribute the worksheets.

The students make a rough copy. Once edited and checked - give them another copy (or just print the handout double sided) and they can make a final copy and decorate.

Finally, have them read and present the best ones. Hang them on the class/school walls!

Using poetry in class really works! Andrea Honigsfeld has a nice article of many techniques for doing this with ELLs (see attached.). Also, I've added another document outlining poetry options for teachers.

Also, diamante poems (Read Write Think has a great description) are also good to use. Much like Grammar poems, they are more focused, consisting of seven lines. Like the following...

Fireball Noun
Brilliant, beautiful 2 Adjectives
Flashing, shining, dashing 3 Verbs
Bright, wondrous, black, nothing 4 words
Staring, hoping, missing 3 Verbs
Deep, quiet 2 Adjectives

Darkness. Noun

-------

One other very simple technique is word association.

1. Give students slips of paper
2. Ask them to finish a sentence and write it on the slip of paper (or just a word they think of in relation to a word you give)
3. Collect the slips and read them as a poem!
4. After, write out on chart paper or hang from string and display!

Give different groups different sentence starters or Topic words.

Students watch the video. Study the poem. Then make their own using Auden's structure. Recite for the class.

This Bukowski poem is great for listening practice and discussion about writing. You might get students to write their own poem rewrite called "So You Want To Be A _____________."   They write in statements like Bukowski's about a career/job.
