I was wondering what you all thought of learning designs pertaining to English language teaching? What are the ways in which you design your lessons to achieve better learning in your students?Continue

Do you have any resources to share or ideas for teaching these holidays?

See our main Thanksgiving page for resources, first off....

Here is a very handy book for holidays, available in our General Teaching Share area under Holidays. Also, giflingua has some presentations on holidays HERE.

As always, member Larry Ferlazzo comes shining through on his own blog - with a rundown of Thanksgiving Day websites chalk full of stuff for teachers. Thanks Larry! This page also see loads of Thanksgiving Day resources!

I really like this old but classic Family Album USA series. Easy level videos in a soap opera / sitcom fashion. Their 3 episodes on Thanksgiving show very well the traditional American holiday (football, turkey etc...) Get the videos in our A/V Player or the new Family Album page! Use the handy exercise book attached!
This video about gratitude is incredible! Use with the gratitude worksheet you will find there.

Any other resources/ideas?

I watched the first thanksgiving episode and it's really cute! But the sound wasn't so great, any ideas why?

I'm looking for Thanksgiving songs.. silly, serious, anything... this is the only one I can think of:

(sung to the tune, Frère Jacques )

Turkey dinner, turkey dinner
Apple pie, 3 feet high
Yummy yummy stuffing
Yummy yummy stuffing
My oh my, my oh my

anything more, hmm, sophisticated?

I'll check into the sound and get back to you. You can also always go directly to the youtube video on youtube. I am busy setting up a player etc...which will play mp4 ( a pain in the butt but will be worth it -- they are higher quality than the normal .flv youtube videos..). I had intended of just using the original video which with a little sophisticated API knowledge you can do and get higher quality stuff ALAS, youtube put up another wall! That's what is happening all over the web, as it consolidates, and the speed is picking up. Less "real" web 2.0 and open source sharing and lots of superficial looking tokenism...

Thanksgiving song? My O My! That's way beyond me. Hope someone can help. But here's a morning creative version.

The Thank You song.

I thank my mother for
all the cooking she will do.
I thank whoever for
all the food we will chew.
But most of all
I thank the turkey
for putting his neck on the line
Thank you turkey
hope I can pay you back sometime.

I like turkey, I like pie.
I like gravy, I won't lie.
Cranberries, stuffing too.
I like it all even
the thanking too.

Okay, I'm making a fool out of myself!!

David, you made these up yourself? I am impressed, even if you just knew them :D :D

Sad about the putting up of walls... exact opposite direction of how it SHOULD go!! What's that Jefferson Airplane song, "Tear Down the Walls"...

The site is looking so good, I feel like I am just getting acquainted with it again! I must have been out to lunch :)..

LOL! I am always full of words, they dance around in my head and knock about...I sometimes feel like John Nash and how he was overcome with numbers. Seriously, I have a disease in that all words lead me to pun. I've had to control it with a mighty part of my will. But there are days when I just see pun after pun after pun in words. It is fun but kinda its own universe...I'm sure there is a medical term :)

If I can find it, I'll scan and put up here a poem , one of the first I got published - Thanksgiving Day. But it is along a more serious line.

About the site -- I'll be opening up the copy site I have and asking members to redesign, in the new year. Should be fun and hope to get some ideas on how to make things better...a kind of sandbox of this site...

I have just made a Powerpoint Presentation about Thanksgiving, but as usual I am stumped as to how to upload and share it!!
Aha! Html or Flash or whatever seems to have kicked in for the day and I can now see this site as it should be including the button that says "upload files"!! Here is my presentation about Thanksgiving. I uploaded it under "HOLIDAYS" category as well.

That's super cool and well produced! Slick stuff. You are a pro and thanks for persevering and getting it uploaded. I know it takes a bit at first but after that, sharing and uploading is a piece of cake....

I'd also recommend to others - The Holiday folder of The Tar Heel Reader. This presentation is really cute and works well with Thanksgiving vocab.

Another good lesson idea for thanksgiving is just having the students first brainstorm all the things they are "thankful for" and then they write up a poster/minibook or drawing. Further, you can get them to write thank you cards to each other....This game is another variation.
I can see how your gift would be difficult to keep under wraps!

I do have a voicethread about giving thanks- I created it to practice (one of the) "th" sound. I messed up on the rerecording of the first page, so I (the native speaker) am not the first voice you hear, but the rest of the song is in the correct order. I would have to erase two people's recordings to fix the first page, so I'm leaving it as it is. I think it still works : )

Looking through Larry's blog, I found The First Thanksgiving by Scholastic. The text can all be "read out loud" with the audio button, and as Larry says, the site is engaging. The level is appropriate for intermediate/ advanced EFL students, I think.
Here's a Friends video that deals with Thanksgiving. Get the quiz HERE.

This site has loads of Thanksgiving Day resources...just added to our bookmarks!
I"m thankful for this website!
I'm doing a Fall/Winter Holidays section so i'd like to broaden my topic past Christmas and Thanksgiving. Can someone help me with Kwanzaa and Hanukkah? I didn't see anything in the MediaFire folder.
