Love That Dog: a great book introducing poetry, with audio

These grammar poems are great for getting students to practice vocabulary, write and present.

First do one on the board together for whatever topic. Then distribute the worksheets.

The students make a rough copy. Once edited and checked - give them another copy (or just print the handout double sided) and they can make a final copy and decorate.

Finally, have them read and present the best ones. Hang them on the class/school walls!

"I Am" poems are cool and a great way to inspire students.

Use these templates but the simplest is just for students to draw a photo and around the photo write their 'I am" statements. Present and share with the class.

Use this presentation  as an example - or students can read the book prior.

Here are two William Carlos William "madlib" poems to get students writing their own "imagist" and very concrete poems.  They work perfectly and a great way to get students thinking creatively and expressing themselves.

Read the books of the two poems here.
