About

The new year is a good time to practice the future tense and making resolutions. A perfect lesson activity.

This video is for the activity sheet below - a strong listening skills activity.

Here are some resources and materials to help you.

Also see the full lesson described using these materials in Lesson In A Can #135.

This resolution generator is also very fun!

This is a nice shared lesson too!

Students can read the book about resolutions on Gif Lingua. Teachers register to download worksheets for all books.

This is a nice presentation and series of worksheets exploring the different ways other cultures ring in the new year.

Here is a nice ppt to review New Years related vocabulary and to introduce the subject.

Here are a couple of powerpoints you might use to show common resolutions (and the language in English for them).

Here are some great resolution cards.  Just print, cut up and get students using to state their resolutions.

Also, play as a game. Students make a resolution using the card prompt and it can be true or a lie. Others vote  TRUE or LIE . Fun game!

Use our Resolution Generator for online full and big screen prompts!

Download the resolution printable cards PDF

Use the online discussion generator. With the prompts, students make and declare their own resolutions.

I just watched the video about 10 new year's traditions around the World. I was very surprised about the first tradition from Denmark. I have never ever heard about such a tradition and I'm in my 50s. I researched a little and found out that there might have been such a tradition in DK in the 1800s (when Hans Christian Andersen lived)!! I think you should remove this video and worksheets from your website as this has nothing to do about current Danish New Year's traditions. Perhaps you should doublecheck some of the other countries' traditions as well.

Strange. I'm meeting my Danish friends tonight and will ask them about this. I thought it was the Greeks that liked to smash plates and dishes!

One tradition I'm surprised many countries have is eating lentil soup on Jan. 1. supposed to assure you'll make lots of $ in the coming year.

You folks have just given me an idea. Nothing to do with New Year, but with traditions that are different. You mentioned the lentil soup.  I will rustle up some of the local traditions and upload them for you to share. Regards

Here is another celebrity New Years Resolution video.

Just write down the names of the celebrities on the board and have the students listen and note the resolution they state. Take up. Simple, easy, effective lesson.
