"Change, change, change...                  Nov. 2010

Dear EFL 2.0 Members,

School is well underway and change is in the air. The change of the season and the change that makes education a challenge and a joy.

Find here lots about what has changed and what will be changing. As the Buddha said, "Change is inherent in all matter."  - to teach is to change.

Personal Thoughts....
site map

I'm going through a lot of change right now. Relocated back to Canada and reassessing what I want to do as an educator. I could see this negatively but rather now see it as a positive - a chance to step back so to jump forward (as the French say). So with your own classes. This is the time of year to assess and see what change needs to happen. Mid term adjustment.

We are so lucky to be able participate as teachers, in the change in the world. It is even more powerful as a group either in your school or here on EFL Classroom 2.0. Lets embrace the change and in so doing, make change. That's the most powerful thing we can do as EFL teachers.

Video of the Month

October was fairly slow on the video front. However, hands down "A Relaxing Video" was the winner. However, I'm highlighting "Teachers in Japan" which aroused a lot of good discussion about Western and Asian educational systems. Besides, "A relaxing video" was Halloween related. Also worth noting were classroom videos by Jesse Iacovetto, Donna Doerfler and Rawya Shatila. Really inspiring student created material!

Find more videos like this on EFL CLASSROOM 2.0

View our whole directory of hundreds of THE BEST VIDEOS. Don't forget ourA/V Player . I'll also suggest both our Best Sites for Teachers and Students and The top 100 videos for Language teaching.

Project Peace recharged!

Project Peace has a new home! I'll be sending out an email shortly and also reloading the peace packs so any teacher/class can make a Project Peace video and participate.

Please join us and think about making your own video. A great way for your students to both learn English and also learn about how peace is a possibility in this world, so long as we keep that flame burning.

I'll also be holding a session about Project Peace on Nov. 17th, during theGlobal Education Conference. 7 am EST. Please join us, it will be a very informal discussion about how to bring peace into our curriculum.

This month we surveyed members on EFL Classroom 2.0 about types of discipline used in the classroom and also how high students rated "English" as a subject. See the results below. Lots that you might find surprising!  Please consider participating, it just takes a few moments and really provides great "data" to fellow teachers and the community.

Resources, Blogs and Forums

Please see my recent blog post  with lots of "goodies" for new teachers.

I also highly recommend our growing Quizlet sets of online flashcards. The largest online, all free and your students can access them after class, no registration needed. Print them too.

Why not get your students started using English Central. I've been involved with the teacher's area of the site and you can sign up and track students easily. They will love it!

- Not only will you get readers, you will be helping fellow teachers. It's easy as just starting to write!   Get inspired and see the new look of our "Random ELT Blog Generator".

I also have listed all the free downloads of ebooks available. Get them below. (besides the thousands on EFL Classroom 2.0).

Great forum and blog posts to follow this month are: Do you have a blog  Karenne asks us and tells us about Bloggers in ELT.  Cell Phones in the Classroom, Tamishra Swain makes a request for members to contribute to her new book.
Also - Teachers. Who Needs Them? and The Indelible Nature of Language were two well followed blog posts.

The most popular resource post was about a new Jeopardy review quiz maker, Quiz Break.

Member of the Month - Yao Dong
Yao Dong is a teacher in Liuzhou, China who has blogged on EFL Classroom and participated behind the scenes. I'd like to honor him, in honor of all our members from China who recently after a long break, have been able to access EFL Classroom 2.0.

Using EFL Classroom 2.0

This month, I'd like to ask all members to tweet and facebook all the great content on our network. If you find some content that you think is great - just hit the twitter or facebook button and let others know! We are a fully private network, not on the "google grid", so this will help let others know we are out there.

TEFList - the Web 2.0 job site.

TEFList grows slow but sure. We now havewidgets you can add to your own site, customizable and with all the jobs in ELT. Some great added features are:

1. Record and email a video in seconds
2.Place an ad before millions with our affiliation with the Indeed job network
3.  NEW Video Conferencing rooms coming this week. High qulaity and low price. Google translated chat and more...
4. Search for all the jobs in ELT. All jobs posted directly on TEFList get prime space before thousands on EFL 2.0.

Please support TEFList with a profile (you can turn off immediately, in your settings). Also, tell others. All profits will help pay for EFL Classroom 2.0 and keep us a free community of thousands.

I will be using our new conference rooms to hold weekly trainings for members. Stay tuned for posted dates on EFL Classroom 2.0.

Parting thoughts.

Are you an ELT Professional? Teaching English as a career? Then please join our ELT Professionals Around the World LinkedIn group. A great place to network and job talk with other professionals.

*** Stay tuned for my textbook, based on my own developed approach, SCC or Student Created Content. See some of the worksheets the book will be based upon, HERE. I'll keep it very student/teacher friendly so that any level of teacher or student can use it and have success. First Edition due Dec. 1st.
