"A classroom without walls"              October 2010
Learning Revolution

Dear EFL Classroom 2.0 members,

I hope everyone is having a great semester of teaching, wherever you are in the world.

Lots "new" on our community, find all the details below. In particular, I'm highlighting all the new ways you can teach and connect.

Let's continue opening doors through the power of social media!

Supporting EFL Classroom 2.0
Eng. Central

It takes a lot to run a successful community with thousands of teachers visiting daily.  Besides, your contributions with resources and knowledge, you can also help us in a few practical ways.

1. Using TEFList our new job site. Please read below and my hope is the income from this "profit" based site will support our open educational movement in ELT.

2. Purchasing a copy of the ebook "The Number 1 in English Language Teaching" A small donation for a powerful resource I put together to help teachers in ELT. You might also consider purchasing a copy of the Reflective teaching journal - Zen and the Act of Teaching or using it in teacher development courses.

I'll be taking a step back from the commnity this year and hope many members will step up and keep us active and number 1!   (this also means no more newsletter unless someone wants to do this - but we will still have monthly email updates).

Video of the Month

This month I'm highlighting our efforts to help Zacharia, a deaf student in Kenya.  Mike Marzio of Real English videos has done so much for us teachers. He's an icon in our profession and when he contacted me to help, there wasn't a second thought. Please read more about our efforts HERE.

Other videos of note.  Words continues to be well viewed and so too the resources for this amazing video. Friday I'm in Love seems to be the song of the month - but also for Young Learners - The Hello SongThe top 60 websites is now also in video - check it out and all the great links!

View our whole directory of hundreds of THE BEST VIDEOS. Don't forget ourA/V Player and I'd also suggest our amazing TED Talks player!

New and Recommended Resources

This month, lots of great resources posted!  I think new or veteran teachers will appreciate this blog post/list of resources  I created for new teachers. We also have a new index to all the best "alphabet" related books on The Tarheel Reader. Many gems to be found. See all the latest resources posted on EFL Classroom 2.0 HERE and please contribute/share . It is easy. Just find a category, comment and upload.

Recently, I published Lessons in a Can in PDF. Please share it and get people using it.  Now, even better is the 60 Best Language Learning and Teaching  sites on the web.  Click the pics to go to the site!  Teacher trainers - please find new presentations including "Authentic Resources" in our teacher training resources . You'll also find there podcasts on language. Many super 5 minute talks about language.

What's Happening? are a series of great contextual power points for teaching!  Made with animate gif images, they bring instruction and learning alive! Your students will love them.

quizlet Our Quizlet flashcard group has dozens of amazing flashcard sets for teaching/learning English. Come join us and make your own. ID/PW eflclassroom/eflclassroom . See this screencast showing the features: play games, take tests - quizlet is amazing!

TEFList - A New Way to Connect Schools and Teachers

Eng. Central TEFList our video job site will come alive this month. I'll be connected thousands of employers and teachers and asking them to support us. TEFList has all the jobs in the ELT universe, on one page. But in particular, you can make a video or connect through video. I'm really breaking barriers with this site and all job ads put directly on TEFList will get attention on the main page of EFL Classroom in the future. Read all about it on the TEFList Blog. The two most powerful and new features of TEFList are:

record a video introductionand send instantly by email  (try it, you can even use just for teaching)
make a video conference roomand connect online. ( try it, you can even use just for teaching)

Ongoing Discussions and Highlighted Blogs!

WHY NOT START YOUR OWN BLOG TODAY? - Not only will you get readers, you will be helping fellow teachers. It's easy as just starting to write!

Our blogs  have such amazing content. In September we had over 50 blog posts by members on all continents (except Antartica). Please follow our Websites of the day  and #1 Series   Great teaching info!

Discussions currently underway include: Classroom Discipline by Michael B / Using Technology by Anita Kwiatkowska and One Day On Earth 10/10/10  by Daniel Lichblau (think about your class participating!).

Member of the Month and ELF Classroom 2.0 Hall of Famer
This month, I'd like to acknowledge and personally thank,  one of our founding members and just one terrific teacher/sharer - Ellen Pham.  Her contributions and generosity are unparalleled.  Visther page and say THANK YOU and check out her resources and websites. Portland Free School in particular.   We all are indebted to her.

Using EFL Classroom 2.0

Please see our   informal screencasts to help members use EFL Classroom 2.0.  Also, why not make a class account? You can make one id / password for your whole class. They can use it to access EFL Classroom under one account (we support multiple log ins). We aren't just for teachers!
Also, now you can share any EFL Classroom 2.0 page/resource with the world. Please click the links on the right of any page and let others know about us. Teaching IS sharing.

Further - see our Using EFL Classroom forum discussion for many more tips and useful things!  Also, use Screenr in your own teaching!

A Learning Management System

Our language management system is now fully functional and out of testing. It is state of the art, open source and free for all teachers who might otherwise not have access to something like this that only large institutions used to possess.

Efront is an open source learning management system and get all info. to help you here.  You'll find video tutorials and "how to " documents.  Sign up and use our Efront and start learning with your students today!  When you sign up - you'll be a student but just email me as the contact email states and I'll upgrade you to admin (to make courses which you can assign to teachers) or professor (to make lessons students can use). See example courses there and I'll be holding several online courses there in the new year (a low cost TESOL certificate course and a certificate course in web 2.0 and technology in language teaching).

ELT Professionals around the world

Do you consider yourself a "professional" teacher? Is this your profession?  Then, consider joining our linkedIn group - ELT Professionals around the world. A wonderful way to network about the ELT profession. We have a lot of great members and this group is designed to let them connect and support each other in their careers.
