Please Help Me Help a Deserving Deaf Student

Posted on June 10, 2010 at 3:00pm 0 Comments

This is Zachariah Ngechu on the right, with his friend Joseph who is also deaf.

Born in 1983, Zachariah lives in a small village called Karagita, Naivasha, north of Nairobi in Kenya. He has access to an internet connection, and wrote me a message on my previous blog where there is a discussion about the special problems which the Deaf encounter when learning English as a… Continue

EVO Video 2010 Progress Report

Posted on January 28, 2010 at 11:00am 0 Comments

Hi Everybody,

There are 5 modertors taking care of all the different tasks for this year's extraordinary EVO Video session. Despite this fact, I have never been more deeply involved in EVO before. I feel like a Secretary in an organization ((as opposed to a lone video editor ;-) or a cameraman with a team :-)) spending LOTS of time on our EVO project.

It's the first time that the workshop is not about How To make videos for your students' needs, nor How To help your… Continue

Collaboration anyone?

Posted on June 21, 2009 at 8:29am 2 Comments

Like Karenne, I'm making a sort of "call-out for help". But I don't like to frame it as "help", rather fun collaboration.

(And Karenne, I will ineed answer your post after writing this one, I go way back to 1976 for my strongest influences).

The idea is simple. I have a great Broadway musical song which can be exploited for EFL ESL students. The file is sitting here on my desktop, and I want to use it as a soundtrack for a video. The challenge is to find images - stills or… Continue

Hello dear, friend, Compliments of the day,Happy to get together with you, My name is Ahuva Baginski, I'm a Soldier from Israel. Please let not my profession, race or nationality inch your mind, I came across your profile and became interested in you, also having something very important to tell you,its not what we can discus here on Site; Please write me on my private email.

Good to hear that you are thinking along those lines.... I'm going to think a little more on the quiz aspect and offer some more specific suggestions in the future. I think there are several things at least that eslvideo could do much better to help students and teachers.

I should have done more to promote the last TESOL EVO sessions - so let me know more closer to Jan. and I'll do what I can to promote your moderated sessions. I've heard good things and their practical nature really benefit teachers.

TEFList will be up soon - man, it has taken a lot more time and attention than I ever thought! I guess you know that -- people see a site and don't actually see/think of all the work behind it. Kind of like when I worked steel work and then would go into one of the building I helped build. People would go about their way oblivious to what we'd done. C'est la vie, i guess......

At 7:51am on September 3, 2009,
Great to hear from you Mike. I was thinking of getting intouch. Was introducing your site in some recent lectures and got to thinking about the future possibilities of you creating some user generated quizzes for the videos. Something along the lines of what does with youtube videos.

Have you ever thought about that? Or even just something simple , online , where teachers can make a printable quiz easily and then share in a library...oh , I'll stop there -- my mind always races with ideas!

Thanks about the newsletter. Not as much info. as usual but clearer. Used a new template and the next one will be better as I get more proficient. I made it with mailchimp's free newsletter maker. Download here. Just sign up for a free membership and you can use it, really easy to use.

I'll be using chimpmail for my commercial job site and was hoping you could be part of the alpha beginning next week? I need some people with a good eye and who can give feedback. I'll send you a password to shortly. I've spent a whole year building it from the ground up but it still needs users perspective. It will be a video site (employers / teachers can record intro. videos or upload and also conference), so your eye will be needed.

Hope all is well, a bientot..... le temp fait beau ici mais je pense meilleur chez vous - vous avez de la chance!

I should have left my email address!

Yes, it is true, as the WWW grows, I still think it needs to grow in the more - personal vein. I guess it will take time. I do know as more and more people use the internet, it is getting more and more local as it at the same time is getting international. Sounds contradictory but isn't the case really. I really do appreciate when others contribute their "spirit" and not just the dry stuff.

The dimensions are 155 wide X 85 height. You can send the pic to jpg or png. I appreciate being able to help others find your valuable videos.

Got to run back to class - teaching Listening skills to Korean teachers. I'll make sure to show them Real English!

At 2:39pm on April 14, 2009,
Hi Mike,

Good question and really want to say that I believe in the full breadth of what the new advent of the internet means - meaning, let the user/teacher/learner decide. Just put the info. out there and see what they will do and where they want to be.

I really have an eclectic view and view this site not as "my own". I truly mean that. It is non commercial as you mention and I don't see any problem doing what you mentioned. At the end of the day, the ethics derive from the integrity and worth of the person at the other end, I believe.

But also, if you want, I more than welcome putting up a photo for your site in our supporter ad box. I offer this to any site that wants to advertise but along with that has "integrity" and value. So please, send me along a picture and it will rotate and be clickable in our supporter ad box. But also put up a blog, add to anything which might relate to Real English and mention Real English. Teachers will value that.

To tell you the truth, I'm really surprised at times by this experiment. I just put my own passion into it and it seemed to blossom. I'm honored others found value and really want it to be a free playing field for anyone with a "voice" / "product" / "idea" for teaching or learning English.

Don't know if I'm making any sense, it is late over here in Korea but I'm speaking from the heart. Your own efforts for us teachers have been wonderful and you deserve any and all promotion. I return to where I began, it is all about the integrity of the product / service / good.

Cheers and let me know if we can put up that "supporter" ad.

Ah! The famous Mike Marzio of Real English fame! Your videos are great, and your site is so generous-
At 11:41pm on March 6, 2009,
Salut Mike,

Thanks for joining us here and I"m awed! You are a legend and I've used and promoted Real English like a junkie. Your work is an incredible door for ELLs and teachers too.

I"ve put your channel up in our member's directory so others will find you but please don't hesitate to let everyone know more about Real English. Up until this past month, I was welcoming all members but time just isn't on my side anymore in this regard. However, I intend to always keep this place personal - in whatever way I can. Like the spirit of your own videos - it's about people.
