January 2011 Blog Posts (30)

It's not how you start, it's how you end.

I've long given one piece of advice that I think seldom gets voiced often by teachers or teacher trainers - at the end of a lesson or day with students, ask just one thing,

"Are you happy?"

And I get the students to say they are happy. Doesn't matter if they are happy or not…

So, I followed instructions to build a moodle website on my laptop... but now I need to find a resource that will tell me how to transfer the moodle on my laptop to a school server or the internet. This might mean that I need to find a web host (well, I defo need a web host eventually, as I want to make my courses available to a wide community). I know the information is out there... it's all probably available on the moodle site, but if anyone… Continue

Simply the Best - for any toolkit

web-tools350pxh There has been A LOT of consolidation online, over the last 7-8 years. Sites, tools have come and gone. The web can be a cruel marketplace and particularly so when it comes to tools that help teachers and get students learning/creating.

There is so much out there! So, in order to help new teachers especially, I'm going to list those that are "Simply the Best" and have stood the test of time. Simply the best sites for students to create, share, produce and work with… Continue

The #1 .... (thing that makes teaching so difficult)

Number One ** Not your ordinary, endless list - just what's number 1.

The participation in the creation of something which is invisible.

There are so many things that make a teacher's life difficult. To name just a few of the thousand: noise, planning, snotty noses, mouthy kids, stuffy classrooms, things that don't work, things that do work but are just a… Continue

Wanna Play Scrabble?

I created a FB account a few years ago, but never got into it. My daughter bugged me to get back on so we could play scrabble. I like to play scrabble with Adele in person, but boy, is it slow online! After about three turns she told me, so the idea mom is to get several games going, so when you get online you always have a turn to play. Ohhhh.

It's fun, low commitment, and I just put my scrabble game on my toolbar so I don't really have to sign into FB to take my…

The #1 .... (way to choose students)

Number One ** Not your ordinary, endless list - just what's number 1.

Mickey Mouse built a house

Choosing students, whether individuals or groups - is something every teacher has to do. And you have to be fair about it. There is nothing that will kill a class quicker than a teacher being seen as "unfair".

So what's the best way? Rock, Scissors, Paper is… Continue

On Brevity

The age of twitter and FB stimulation, is upon us. Brevity and quickness - the instant. Nobody takes "the time" any more. It's all about me or more to the point, "give me".

Cart before the horse?

horse-cart-759743 A lot of teachers have been reading a previous post entitled "Faking it". There I outlined my belief that a lot of students and teachers were, "playing school" and that not as much learning as possible was occuring.

I have another thought to add.

I recently took a poll on EFL Classroom 2.0 about the relative importance of productive vs receptive activities in the classroom. Here are the… Continue

3 Wishes for ELT

three_wishes I really believe in the power of faith. Long ago, I remember reading C.S. Lewis' poignant, "The Problem with Pain" and noting his wonderful philosophy of simply acting as if something were true. That if we pretend the world is so, it might just become so....

So since the new year is upon us, I'd like to share my faith with you - by making 3 wishes for English language teaching. 3 things I wish would happen in the new year or even right away. After mine - it's your turn.…

Interview with myself

teaching wig { I think this a great reflective activity for any teacher. Going to do this as part of the curriculum in some of my future courses, for sure }

Can you provide a link to a site where we can see something about what you do or the center where you… Continue

The Future of Learning

sugatamitri I have written and pounded the pulpit long and hard on the issue of teachers "getting out of the way". Ranted and pleaded with teachers to be more inductive in their approach, more sandbox about the learning environment.

No greater compliment to my own constructivist and technology enabled vision can I find than Sugata Mitra. He's a wonder and I've been writing… Continue
