NFB - the best of "Canada" and the world in video!

I love the National Film Board of Canada and I've previously highlighted their fine videos and especially animations - for use in the classroom (or just enjoyment!). We have many classics like George and Rosemary, The Big Snit and Paddle to the Sea, in our videos.

The videos stream well and offer a wealth of authentic material and animations for use in the… Continue

Calling All Angels - Using Movie Maker

WMM I just subtitled "Calling All Angels", a music video of a fabulous and "quirky" Canadian singer, Jane Siberry. Just beautiful and slow - perfect for language learning. I'm also celebrating her because in the spirit of art and knowledge and love - she has just recently made her whole 16 album music collection FREE for downloading. Talk about progressive…

Week #4-Monday's class

Today we reviewed and discussed adjectives and adjective clauses. We covered Ch. 8 all the way through exercise 20.

Don't forget to complete the exercises listed on Blackboard, and to write your paragraph for Wednesday. I've uploaded an example paragraph for reference, and it should help you with your task.

Please do what you can to attend class and complete your homework. We're at the half-way point in the program, and we've only 4 weeks left.

Please also feel… Continue

Weebly is a site where your students or you can make a website. Free and very simple.

Next semester, I'm teaching a course on Culture and language and will have my students make their own websites as part of their course requirements. You could also make a website for your own students or better yet, get them to make their own. Also, useful as a blogging site for your students who can easily share with each other…

More on "Killing Creativity"

The video "Every Student Counts", above in our videos, is simple and powerful. It speaks to us educators in a number of ways. The number of ways we should allow for more creativity in our classrooms - not just in language but in those most basic things we teach in the hidden curriculum - being human.

I will list my own practical ways teachers can be a lot more…

Every book has it's cover - every lesson needs a hook!

Yes, every book does have its cover and for a reason. The cover is the most important part of the book. Why? Well not because it tells the story or has "content" or "stuff". Rather, because it fires us up, it gets us motivated, it stirs our soul. It creates anticipation - that potent elexir that all students (and teachers) need to drink.

Our lessons are similar. We need a HOOK! Something to create energy and excitement about our time together. And I don't just mean chit-chat… Continue

Suggestions - The Tao of Teaching "journal"

Over the last year, I've compiled this ebook - The Tao of Teaching. It sprung up through a forum conversation and just grew and grew.

Presently, I'm editing it and will make it into a reflective journal, using the passages as a prompt, along with a nice quote about learning/teaching/education for reflective writing. A journal professors/teachers can use with pre or inservice teachers in training.

Do you have any suggestions for this? I've long been a great advocate of… Continue

Being a "subversive" teacher.

Postman and Weingartner in Teaching as a subversive activity talk of subversion being even a tiny act, even as tiny an act as thinking about who you are as a teacher. Subversion begins there, in that kernel of self truth.

They asked teachers,

Why do you teach?

I can control people.

I can tyrannize people.… Continue
