The New Gig

Most of what I have been teaching the first to weeks if required freshmen English classes. We are using interchange text books.

My classes are organized by major. This means that they vary quite a bit as some majors have low values on learning English, like my Phys ED class. But to my surprise it was my buddism class that is the biggest headache. Its filled with older Koreans who have decided that they cant speak English. Most of the lesson revolves around them forcing the only… Continue

New Job

Its funny how things work in Korea. Things never seem to pan out how you expect them too. The reason I have been AWOL lately is because I have changed jobs here in Korea. Quite unexpectedly I went from working in the EPIK program at a middle school in Pohang to teaching at a university just outside of Pohang.

With the new job came a new apartment, my own office, and lots of paperwork. Not to meantion all of this happened with my trip to the US in the middle.

So EPIK… Continue

Teaching Writing - Helpful Websites....

Teaching writing isn't easy but despite being a "high order skill" it is an invaluable thing for any student who will work in an all English environment. Or for any second language speaker who'll communicate online (or by snail mail - people still do that, you know!).

Fortunately there are many online sites to help teachers instruct and for students to visit and get much needed feedback and practice.…

Google has Flipped out! - A lonely teacher's lifeline.

I remember "years" ago when I got out of teacher's college and first began teaching overseas in the Czech Rep. There was no internet back then (92) nor satellite TV or even English TV. And only once a week did one copy of the European (do you remember that wonderful creation of the eccentric Robert Maxwell? I adored it.) arrive at the downtown "tabac". If I was one minute late, I'd be out a whole weeks worth of delicious reading! Never mind the weeks when it didn't… Continue

What to do the day before the GRE Test

What to do the Day before the GRE?

You shouldn’t feel jittery on the day before the GRE. Also, taking a GRE Practice test or revising some GRE Prep material won’t help you get a higher GRE Score. Rather, you should relax, to make sure that all your GRE Preparation gives the full result the next day.

The following tips will help you make sure that you do well:

1. Don't study for the GRE the day before test day. The GRE is a comprehensive test, so what you… Continue

Teaching the Planets and about "Space"

Today I spent a little time helping out another teacher with resources for teaching about the planets. I thought I'd take a moment and just share here too.... This is fascinating stuff for kids of all ages and if you can get them doing any of the following, you'll be successful.

1. Project - get groups to make posters and present on one of the planets. Great practice for numbers!

2. Make a mobile. Students cut and paste and make a living mobile for… Continue
