Pohang, Where Fat Kids Get Rice Cakes.

So much to say and so little energy to say it. I got an apartment. It is 2 min. walk from school and it is really nice. Apparently the Vice Prinicple fought the Municiple Office of Education for me to get it even though it was out of budget. I will post a video of it this weekend. No oven, no dryer, no microwave, so shower that you would recognize, but it is the coolest place I have ever lived.

Everyone at Yanhak middle school has been great to me. Most of the English teachers speak a…

Happy New Year!

In the Jewish Faith the New Year falls either in September or October, the date this year is Sept 12th. The reason for the changing date is that the Hebrew Calendar is based both on the moon and solar cycles, similar to the Chinese calendar. The Greeting most commonly used among British Jews, is "Happy New Year, and Well Over The Fast", reminding us of the upcoming fast on the "Day of Atonement".

When I taught EFL, this was an exellent opportunity to learn about other cultures and…

English Dodgeball - a fun game

Use the big fluffy dice instead of a ball.

Students must run across the classroom.

The Teacher will throw the ball and hit them to get them out.

However, the teacher will call specific groups or even individuals to make the run:

People wearing watches.

Boys

Anyone with a hat.

Students with the name Park.

YOUR TEACHING STYLE - TEACHING QUIZZES

I'll be using this space to add and post teaching quizzes. Many out there meant to give a teacher insight into themselves and thus, better their teaching. "Know thyself" is an important thing to a good educator.

Teaching styles are important to know. We all have a tendency towards one kind of style and this effects the learning in the classroom and what happens. A good educator knows their style and in this awareness, adjusts the style to suit the learners or…

Why blog?

I am writing a short article to be published on a magazine for EFL teachers in Israel. It is about blogs. I thought I might write a few things that I intend to have published on that article, just to see if you, colleagues, think that I am on the right track.

I will just post here a few of the things that I have already prepared. The article (I have submitted a first draft which may be edited) is a bit longer.…

THE POWER OF STORY

Whatever the subject, I believe that stories should play a vital role. We are hardwired to learn through stories and more importantly to "embed" within our subconscious mind, the lessons and learning of life, by way of story. Wisdom is a story.

I have used stories in the EFL classroom and especially funny stories (there are some good ones in my teaching folder, about 25 simple ones. ) I have also had a lot of success using folktales and they are especially effective…

Monkey Chat -my one online activity that was a real hit

It's funny how sometimes you spend hours creating an activity, sure that the students are going to really enjoy it and learn something too, only to find that you were wrong and the activity is a total flop. Then other times you pull something together quickly and it is a success, go figure!

A few years back I discovered www.PandoraBots.com a site which hosts AI chat bots that you can use in your websites. The chat bot itself on a web page is…

Use the Book!!! The tyranny of print!

I have always had a very cautious view about using a book to teach language. For many reasons which I'd like to elaborate on. I've had a few discussions recently about this, regarding new teachers and their need for a book. Most people advocate that a new teacher use a book -- or any teacher for that matter, use a book. I'm not so sure. I see the benefits and I myself as a beginning teacher enjoyed those. The structure, the ability to "seem" in control and perform as what…
