Online Communities of Practice

Teaching has traditionally been a relatively lonely profession. A situation which is heightened when teachers find themselves living and working in a foreign culture. In the case of Assistant Language Teachers on the JET Programme, many are relatively new to teaching and EFL. Consequently, ALTs tend to run into problems which are not only cultural but pedagogical as well.  In order for teachers to develop professionally and adjust to life in Japan, it is paramount that they reflect on their…

Issues in ELT & Issues in SLA

I haven't written much about language recently but I'm definitely always thinking about it. It is itself a jailer, something I can't get away from and like the adage goes "I am language".

An Open Door Policy For Schools

The one thing I have always wished about school - that it was a marketplace of ideas/learning where all in the community could come and go as they please. A doors open, windows blowing fresh air through policy.

This is far from how it works. Going to school is mandatory for students, a criminal sentence. Many or most parents have to book an appointment to go to their child's classroom. Invite guests into your classroom? Be prepared for reams of paperwork and forms to be approved.…

Featured Resource: Storyboards

Storyboards are an excellent resource that allows students to creatively produce language.

They can either be drawn by students (see the template) and then the students tell the story. Or, they can be predone and students use to tell the story or write out the…

Featured Resource: Quiz and Trivia Questions

I was a big trivia buff when growing up. Captain of our high school "Reach for the Top" team and proud of it. Avid Jeopardy watcher. All part of being curious about the world I guess. And I think most students are too and it is great to learn "something" while learning language.

We have some…
