I'm really proud of some of the creative games I've made. One that I really think is stellar is "Transl8it".

I've recently updated it and get it through a now available "Big Screen" version. It is simple as pie to play and students love it. Maybe even get them to make their own games by visiting…

ESL Kids Jingle Bells

This is a great song to teach the younger kids for Christmas. The flashcards come from and the music from Dream English. To teach just print out the flashcards and hand them out to the kids if they hear their word in the song they stand up.Christmas.ppt…

What's Next?

The whole month of December, I'll be highlighting here content/ideas/material that I feel is in need of some "daylight". There is so much of value and it just needs members to open a window so others can see it/find it.

I've previously blogged about…

Going With The Flow

I've been doing lots of thinking about social media, technology and especially about my own role in it all a la EFL Classroom 2.0.

It's been tough going. With the exponential growth of twitter and Facebook these last two or so years, it isn't easy to form online "community". People go where people are. And most of the world are living in the metropolises of Twitter…

Thank You Lesson

It's Thanksgiving Day (in the U.S. which in Canada is also US). So I thought I'd share a lesson I really love. It is great for the end of the year, session and really is a great way to show that all students contribute to the class - that they all indeed, count.

1. On the board prior to class write on one side of the board.

Thank you for…

Let's Ban "The Ball"

Recently, a school in Toronto banned "the ball"  from school. The whole school. They are opting for something safer like badminton and bean bag tossing. My old school board, TDSB (Toronto District School Board) is considering a board wide ban. What's next? Banning pencils?

Watch the video…

Blackboard Jungle

They broke my records......

And so this iconic film scene (Blackboard Jungle) begins. The main character experiences an intense dilema about his own role as a teacher. Watch as he goes "on the record" in the high school staff room. Watch and ask yourself the question at the end of the film. {and maybe drop a comment as your answer}

I'll certainly be showing this to my students…

It's Not A Box! Synectics

My university recently hosted the ICE (Imagination / Creativity / Education) Conference. Instead of giving a presentation and being all concerned with that - decided to join many of my student teachers and enjoy a day of attending the workshops and gathering ideas. So glad I did!

The highlight for me…

My Perfect Classroom

{ I originally published this in Barbara Sakamoto's wonderful blog - Teaching Village. I revive it hear because I think its message is pertinent and important. }

The problem with our profession is that there is too much teaching and not enough learning”.

I said this recently during a discussion and I think it is such an important point to…

On Praxis

Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.

- Johanne Wolfgang von Goethe

How do we take our teaching to the next step? From mere classroom activity and into the wide, open world?

The world is changing so fast, we don't even know for what world we are preparing our students who will graduate many years away. Isn't it…

KWL - a great "frame"

A KWL organizer is a perfect way to "frame" a lesson. It is almost a lesson plan in itself and fosters a lot of student activity and promotes thinking skills. I've modified this one to be a little more friendly for student input.

It's quite a simple process to use one.

1. Write the topic you will be…
