Two options.
They can either write a letter to Santa which someone in the…

This is my favorite Christmas lesson. I've taught this lesson it seems, a zillion times. Works with all levels. I call it "Gift Giving".
It is a great way to close out lessons for the holiday break.
Basically, it is groups of students giving each other Christmas gifts that are cut outs provided by the teacher. Not real gifts but works the same!

As a teacher, you’re not supposed to share your personal life with your students, at least not anything beyond what they already know about life in general and what they consider to be pretty unmeaningful in the grand scheme of life (your marriage, your eating, your drinking coffee). But that is okay - the world is beautiful because it is made of so many who are different. There is room for all of us.

When selecting a school to work at, select a school that has upward mobility. A school that has what you want. Some of these schools don’t have upward mobility, whatsoever. Some of them are just very structured. They’re government jobs. And you work the same position year after year, doing the same things. Many don’t even allow innovation within the classroom, so you can’t even grow beyond the old models of teaching. How does that sound? Sounds like a slow and…

We’ve reached a point in time where you can almost always avoid reinventing the wheel.
Memory games are spectacular for getting the students off your back, particularly in countries where raw human-derived memorization is considered the path to success. This is why people love talking to parrots.
Getting the students to stretch their memories is an easy task to give them.…

I recently came across this great blog post about Six highly provocative quotes in ELT, from the 6 things blog.
I love a good aphorism and though these are all thought provoking, they somewhat lack the punch and umphapha that Nietzsche would have imagined. I guess that is par…
