EDUCATION / ETHICS / NEW TECHNOLOGY

I'm a pretty big cheerleader of our sister site, Classroom 2.0 and belong and participate in several groups there. Much like our Ning but focused on technology and its application for education.

Recently participated in a very enlightened discussion there (and sprawling, as is all thought).…

Hi!

I teach English Language Learners at a high school in Sacramento, CA.

I'm impressed with the work Dave (and others!) have done developing this site, and look forward to learning from EFL Classroom 2.0.

My "regular" blog is at http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/.

THE POWER OF STORY

Whatever the subject, I believe that stories should play a vital role. We are hardwired to learn through stories and more importantly to "embed" within our subconscious mind, the lessons and learning of life, by way of story. Wisdom is a story.

I have used stories in the EFL classroom and especially funny stories (there are some good ones in my teaching folder, about 25 simple ones. ) I have also had a lot of success using folktales and they are especially effective…

Monkey Chat -my one online activity that was a real hit

It's funny how sometimes you spend hours creating an activity, sure that the students are going to really enjoy it and learn something too, only to find that you were wrong and the activity is a total flop. Then other times you pull something together quickly and it is a success, go figure!

A few years back I discovered www.PandoraBots.com a site which hosts AI chat bots that you can use in your websites. The chat bot itself on a web page is…

Use the Book!!! The tyranny of print!

I have always had a very cautious view about using a book to teach language. For many reasons which I'd like to elaborate on. I've had a few discussions recently about this, regarding new teachers and their need for a book. Most people advocate that a new teacher use a book -- or any teacher for that matter, use a book. I'm not so sure. I see the benefits and I myself as a beginning teacher enjoyed those. The structure, the ability to "seem" in control and perform as what…

Digital Stories

I teach my teachers a course on storytelling and part of it, I deal with Digital Story telling and especially getting their high school students to use their cameras, tech skills and tell their own stories. I have many examples on the video part of my site at www.ddd.batcave.net Stories are sssooooooo powerful and are in my opinion (and always will be) the nexus of teaching. Even science and biology are courses held together by this…

HAPPY CANADA DAY, EH!

I'm not much for nor into nationalism/patriotism or other forms of psychosis. But I do come from a particular part of the world and enjoy making fun of (light heartedly) of my own cultural "wrinkles". Particularly on Canada Day. So here's to cultural diversity, the fact which makes this world so much more fun and interesting....

Happy Canada Day, eh. Now I'm off to learn make love in my canoe.....

Educational Bliss

I really truly, madly deeply, believe in the power of education. Not as a way to knowledge but wisdom -- as a way of forming a proper relationship between yourself and that "outside". Tat tvam asi" , the brahmin might say, "That art thou".

Not to wax philosophically but I do think that as educators we should always carry this higher…
