Sugata Mitra and Minimally Invasive Teaching

"The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say,
"the children are working as if I don't exist."

- Maria Montessori

During the last year, I've been following the KhanAcademy locomotive as it chugs on to distant fertile lands and glory.   I'm a big believer of video and its revolutionary…

School's Out Forever .....

I'm still plugging away on my book, tentatively titled "School's Out Forever" - a play on the famous cry of the immortal Alice Cooper, "School's Out For Summer".

My idea is to think fresh, think anew and have a grasp that exceed's my reach. To paint a picture of what education could…

Blasts from the Pasts: TED Talks player

Years ago, I built a player that collects ALL the TED Talks in one handy place. HD. Also, the player is designed to promote serendipity, browsing, stumbling upon ..... so little does this happen in this day and age where we only seem to feed our present prejudices. …

The 3 A's of a great teacher

Yesterday, exhausted after a full day of speaking with people around the world, stressed out and with lots of "life"on my mind, I stepped back and watched a TED Talk I've been meaning to watch for awhile:  The 3 A's of Awesome.

If you have 20 minutes to spare in your life - WATCH IT!  Neil Pasricha is just so true and real as he tells his own story.…

It's not how you start, it's how you end.

I've long given one piece of advice that I think seldom gets voiced often by teachers or teacher trainers - at the end of a lesson or day with students, ask just one thing,

"Are you happy?"

And I get the students to say they are happy. Doesn't matter if they are happy or not -…

Do Teachers Kill Creativity

Do teachers kill creativity? What is the harm that a "teacher" does, just by being a teacher? Do we indeed stunt student achievement, growth and "thought" by our mere presence as a model and person to look up to and copy/become?

Like Ken Robinson's story in "Do School's Kill Creativity", where the… Continue

Getting to know about where you teach ....

English language teachers travel and like strangers in a strange land, try to learn about their new "home". It is important to learn about the culture and history of the people you'll teach. Language is about and in turn, wrapped up with culture and identity.

I've lived now 5 years in Korea and will be indelibly tied and connected to this amazing peninsula. Along the way, I've tried to understand my students and the people among who I've… Continue

TEDx - the local version

I'm a HUGE fan of TED - a series of lectures on Technology, Education and Design. I've written a lot about them, especially my favorites and also built a great HD player that brings them to us, as they are put online.

Now, there is TEDx, local versions of TED.… Continue

A People's Dictionary - an Internet possibility!

I've long been one who "protests" the dictionary as a form of enslavement! It is a traffic cop, a false prophet saying and prescribing what words are "right" and which are "wrong". BAAAAAAHHHHH

This delightful TED Talk is really entertaining and in her quirky way, this "lexicographer" pleads for technology to liberate words and give us a beautiful dictionary where words , ALL words are equal and beautiful and loved. It's a great watch and you'll pick up a few… Continue

Siftables -- a future tool in our classrooms!

I've been engrossed of late with how I might use voice recognition technology in the language classroom. I might test drive it this semester -- I'll walk around the classroom "wired" and as I speak, all the students will see it come up in script on the screen.

This really isn't intended for the very fluent teachers I teach - rather, for the very young learners of any language who usually acquire oral fluency before that of reading and… Continue
