2 programs (downloads) for elementary students

Not web2.0 but definitely EFL. 2 programs that my students have enjoyed in the past -

Talkany - very lightweight text to speech program (375kb) which reads out any English or Spanish text pasted in. The user can choose from different fun voices and speeds, such as:

whisper, monotone, robot, boy singing, old woman ... and many more.

There is no need to install the program, simply run it from the link, exellent for kids who need that extra support when reading.

My Friend - small but neat program for learning and practising the parts of the body and colors. Kids build a colorful monster by clicking on the vocabulary words. Once their monster is "perfect", they can print out a coloring page which includes the monster outline and the coloring instructions, based on their creation. (Teacher could also use this to create work pages)

I would have added these to the media fire account but couldn't remember the sign in info.

We need more info. for educators about text to speech. So this is appreciated.

I've been collecting hundreds of pieces of language/educational software. When the new site goes up in Jan. members will get all this - so much great stuff - from lesson creating tools, test making tools to text to speech and voice dictionaries etc...

Susan ,

I really began tinkering with these two tools and they are such great and functional developments for language learning. We live in splendid times with all the great tools coming to help students. I guess the hard part is the cheerleading...

I like talkany because it really attracts the young user. Super cool and they DEMAND this stuff. It's all about image but once you get them in the door, it is a party.

My friend is limited but nice and fun nonetheless...

Thanks a million again. I'll put these in the what's new box.
