Chinese Students Talked About A Movie With American Students Online

After reading the story or watching the movie, A Streetcar Named Desire, describe an event that happens and explain if anything similar would ever happen in your community. Do people in your community ever act like the characters in this story? These are some things to think about:

1. Do men usually dominate over women as the men in the story rule over the women, expecting the women to stay home to feed them and take care of the house?

2. Do men ever hit their wives and then do the wives return to their husbands as Stella came back to Stanley? Have you ever seen relationship abuse between couples in your community?

3. Do women need men to feel emotionally and economically secure as Blanche wants to get married for these reasons? Is marriage a high priority for women in your culture?

4. Are there cases when older adults sexually seduce younger people as Blanche sexually seduced her student?

5. Are homosexuals ridiculed as Blanche's husband was? Or are homosexuals accepted in society? (In the movie it was not mentioned that Blanche's husband was a homosexual but in the book he was. The director of the movie felt society wouldn't want that mentioned in the movie since people didn't talk about homosexuality in the 1950s when the movie was made.)

6. Why do you think this story is still read after all these years? Why do you think it has remained a classic?

7. The men drink a lot in the story and when Stanley is drunk he is more violent. Does your society have people like this, too? Is drinking a problem for some people? Does your community have any programs to help people with drinking problems?

8. You're welcome to bring up any other topics about the story you would like to discuss.

Chinese students' comments on the movie

We are students from the English department of Guangxi University of Technology(GXUT),China. Below are what we think of the movie A Streetcar Named Desire.

--------------------------------

I think that women do not just stay at home to feed their husband afer they have got married as this is a very traditional way . I think it is not good for woman. In fact, it is very bad .Because as a woman , especially in a modern society ,we women should be independent ,we should do anything by ourselves as much as we can .Only by means of that can we realize our own value and make our life more beautiful.

( by He Huilin---何慧琳 )-----------------------------------

Now we have watched a part of this moive.Blanche and stella are sisters. They get on well with each other. Both of them like smoking ciggarets.S

tanley, the husband of Stella,is too much masculine. He beats his wife.He is so rude. But he also loves his wife very much.Stella often forgives him.But Blanche doesn't agree with her.She is afraid that her sister will be hurt again.

Mitch, the man who falls in love with Blanche,is diffrent from the others. He is very kind to the women.

( by Xie Cuini---谢翠妮)

It’s a moving movie that makes me think a lot. It reminds me of the hardships that women had suffered. The actress suffers from loneliness and she worried because of the reality. Her husband died and left her alone. She lives alone and does everything herself. Gradually, she doesn’t trust any men. And also, she believes that man who is rude to woman is not a good man, and woman should marry a gentleman, only in this way can a woman own the happiness. ( By Cheng Lan--- 程岚 )

I think that Blanche is a profligacy woman. She always seduces some men. I think that she is a bad woman.

Stalley is a bad-tempered man as he beats his wife ,has a row with her .Athought he loves her ,he does it again and again .I think this case does not only happan in other country but also in China.Family voilence is a big problem in a family. Wemen should take useful ways to protect theirs right.

( By Wei Haiyan---韦海燕)

My first impression on Blanche is that she is beautiful, mature, sensitive and a gentle lady. But she looks a bit worried and helpless about the new city when she visits her sister for the first time. She feels a little disappoited while she gets to the house of her sister because the room is so small and messy. Stanley, the husband of stelly, is a rude , irritable person.

(by Wang Lingzhen---王玲珍)

After watching the movie, a few thoughts pop up in my brain. When Blanche was first seen to me, I thought her as a soft, gentle, pretty girl, but I was wrong, she has something I do not like, she smokes, often goes to the parties since she does not got a job. Stella is very kind to her sister, she is characteristic of women.Stan, who is a man of short temper, hits his wife frequently. Like the other men in the movie, the men all have something in common---violence.I think that is because of the social background, men dominate women, it seems that men are everything and they have all kinds of rights. Fortunately, this does not exsist in some part of our modern society.

( by Pang Qiuyan---庞秋雁)

I think that Stella is a kind woman. She loves her husband and sister. She does not allow her husband to pick on her sister. Stanley is a bad temper person. His wife has been pregnant. But he hit her.I think that he is not a good man.

( By Ye Xuelian---业雪莲)

Stanley is somewhat violent , especially when drunk . He beats his wife after drinking . But he loves her very much in his heart . He felt shameful when he woke up and realized what he had done to his wife . His wife is very kind . She cares about her sister a lot and forgives Stanley’s violence to her . She understands her sister and husband and cares about them

(by Pang Jiantao---庞剑涛)

I think Blanche is beautiful, sick, tender but unconventional and degenerate woman .Stella is beautiful, outgoing, kind-hearted and she loves her sister and husband very much. Stanley is a handsome, strong man . He is also very rude, uncivilized and impolite. But he loves his wife very much . Though sometimes he beats his wife, he always feels regretful to her after that .Mitch is a very kind, gentle and tidy-and- neatly-dressed man .

( by Pan Xiao---潘宵)

My thought about the film---Though I have just watched a section of the film ,I think the film shows us that women and men were not equal to each other in the early time.A men is the master of a family while a woman should obey her husband. But now, this situation has changed.

by Luo Xiangguo---骆祥顾)

It is difficult for me to understand this film because the characters speak so fast that I can’t follow them easily. But I really like Stanley. You know, though he hits her when she was going to have a baby, afterwards he begs her by kneeling down and she forgives him and loves him still. Though Blanche spoke ill of her husband, she sees her husband she forgets everything and throws herself into his arms. Loving a person ,we should love everything about him.

( by Luo Dongling---罗东铃)

I think Mitch is a gentleman.Hee looks friendly and kind-hearted.He falls in love with the English teacher at first sight. When stanlay became rude and violent to his wife,he tried his best to stop him,he always helped Blanche and comfort her.So i think he is a very good person.

by Liu Yin--- 颖)

Stanley is so rough ,short-tempered and violent. .He is not a good husband .Sometimes he is strange and it is hard for people to understand what he is thinking..

( by Liang Yuanzhen---梁源珍)

I have watched half of the movie. But I still can not understand much about it because the actors speak too fast in this movie. Blanch works hard. But he can not be a good husband. He does not know what his wife really wants

( by Huang Yihua---黄怡桦)

Blanche is a woman who is eager for love ,and longs for being focused on. Maybe she is a little selfish, and she does not care about what others think of her.She is fashionable and maybe she is a little too vain.In a word ,in her character ,there are both good sides and bad sides .Stella is a kind woman ,she loves her husband very much though he is violent .She also loves her sister . Sometimes because of this ,she does not know how to deal with it when the two come into conflicts.Stanley is a violent young man ,though he also loves his wife very much ,yet he sometimes beats her .He tries his best to put up with Blanche, yet he is more or less impetuous. In my eyes ,Mitch is a man who is easily to be tempted.

( by Huang Fangping---黄芳萍)

Because i have not seen the movie yet, i don not know how to comment on the movie, but my impression is that i do not like the people in it.Maybe the effect of movie is not good( I dislike black-and-white movies,to be frankly.).I don not know what is the main idea of the story.Still,i want to say something about it.I think Blanche is very untrue, and Stella ia very kind but pitiful. Stanley has a strong character,he resort to violences.

( by He Huiling---何慧玲)

I read this story last term,so I know the movie a bit better. I would like to share with you my feeling of the movie. What a sad story it is! At the beginning of the story, I think that Stanley is a straight-forward, honest but a little cruel person. I can’t believe that he hit his wife and sexually abused Blanche. It might be a symbol of the masculine man in the old world. He tries to control his wife. Why could he betrays his wife? Maybe Stella should not return to Stanley for his betrayal. From the beginning to the end, Stella is royal to her husband. She is kind to her sister and enthusiastic. But what happened to her is so terrible. It’s a bad thing if you are divorced by your husband and return to your own home.

( by Chen Xingzhen---陈兴珍)

When Blanche appeared in the movie at the first time, I think she is a very beautiful girl. After watching the movie for a while, I found that she was a girl who had been hurt emotionally .The boy who loved her had died , she fell into pain and unabled come out . She is a little mentally-disordered. Stella was a lively girl .She liked stimulative things. She loved her husband and her sister very much .For the sake of her sister , she could quarrel with her husband. Stanley was a strong but rude man .I hate him very much . He loved his wife very much .thought they quarrel with each other.

( by Chen Xiaoli---陈小丽)

Blanche is beautiful and sexy woman who likes showing herself off ,but she is always scary of something.Stella doesn’t likes to work ( Is it true she couldn’t find work?),so she has to depend on her husband ,though he is so rude to her.Stanley is a rude man ,who enjoys gambling and drinking.

by Cai Yeyin---蔡业银)

Blanche is a so rude man. I do not like him very much. He did not know his wife and argued with her. Even he hit his wife. He is not a good husband.Stella is a good wife and sister. She knew her sister had done something wrong,( Is it true that she had found out what her sister had done before she came to her home?) so she helped her.Stanley is so poor. She had a bad temper. Mitch is a good man. I know he likes Blanche. I think he will make her happy. He is a good husband in the future.( This student won’t say this after she finishes watching the movie.)

( by Zhong Wanyin---钟婉银)

Blanche goes and lives under her roof of Stella's,her feeling might not so good.Stella must love her husband very much that she can forgive his fault.Stanley is a handsome but violent man who has a bad temper.

by Xu Cailian--- 徐彩莲)

I think Blanche is a woman who a little crazy, something she did I can’t understand.Stella is a kind woman, she is easy to forgive others and she is easy to satisfied.Stan is a cruel man, he often drinks and hit Stella, but sometime he also like a child, need others love.Mitch is a veracious man, he is a little fool, but is easy to get along with. He wants to show his love to Blanche, but obviously he doesn’t know how to do.

( by Wang Zheng---王正)

I think Blanche is a girl who was influend by the death of her hunsband .I feel she was a little mad and vain. She thought a woman should be independent by herself .but she couldn’t do it .Stella was always dependent on her hunaband .she did not work ,instead staying at home. I think she should do something by herself. So far, I have a bad expression on stanley . He hit his wife that that is a very bad thing .I think for whatever reason , he should not use violence. I think the couple should love each other and understand each other. To some extent , I agree with the Blanche who said Stan is like an animal ..

by Qin Huihong---覃慧红)

This film is reflects that time when men was a little cruel! But I think this is ture,if only men do work to support the family. The man will become a little proud, and will think he is in a higher situation. But now this has changed.Women can do lot of work just like men. They support family together. Not only the woman but also the man take care their children and do housework together.

by Owen---欧文)

Blanche has a big shadowland about her past. Sometimes she is very pretty, but sometimes she can not control her feelings. But what’s more, I consider she is not dishonest enough. That’s not good. Stanley is a handsome, straight-forward man. But sometimes he can’t use a rational way to solve the problems between him and her wife. We can learn something about relationship abuse from him.

by Huang Limei---黄丽梅)

My first expression of the characters in “The Streetcar of Desire” is as follow:Blanch is a sick wonman who has many sad stories in her mind and she is often worrying what others would say about her past.Stella is a kind girl ,who often does her best to keep her sister calm and never complain to her husband’s violence .Mitch is a gentlemen who is friendly to everyone ,especial to Blanch .And he is against violent also.Stanley is a rude man who easily gets angery ,often qurrals with others, even hits his wife .It’s very bad!Does the film mainly tell us something of “violent” and American’s early life which is very messy and hard? I hope to finish the movie and write more about it.In that time women had no right equal to men and they had no work so they have to ask money from their husbands.

by He Yanqin---何燕琴)

Blanche was kind ,friendly, accessible, and she was sesitive to the violence ,facing which she knew that women needed to get their right instead of being controlled by the stronger men. And she looks luxurious in her dress.Stella was a loyal wife ,soft to her husband though he was violenct to her ,and she would not like to do anything Instead of giving a hand out for money to stanley who was her husband.Mitch:He was kind to girls, respectful to them ,certainly he was stronger and romantic. ( by Cai Yan---蔡燕)

Hello Cheng Lan!

Hello Cheng Lan, we'll allow me to start, by saying that I agree with you. Women have and still are suffering due to men or the simple fact of self consciousness, but the reality is that “WE” as the future of these world have been learning from the pass and I am certain that we will make a difference. What about you, do you believe that this world will change with the knowledge we are obtaining today?

Reply to Ye Xuelian

Hello Ye Xuelian! I agree with you when you said that Stanley has a bad temper. When he becomes mad he has a hard time controlling his anger and often times takes out on his wife, Stella, either verbally or physically. This is unhealthy in a relationship because in modern day society this occurs and is normally not a one time thing. A husband will promise his wife a positive change in his behavior and promise that it will never happen again. This becomes an everlasting cycle of violence that is extremely hard to escape. Is abuse common in relationships where you live?

HI Lan! I agree what you

HI Lan! I agree what you said about woman should marry a gentleman. Today, it's OK to live without a man, but women who lives alone will feel longly. But the problem is, sometimes women don't know who is the good man. When they fall in love with a man they just think he is the best.
what is your standard to define a good man?

Reply about women's role

He Huilin 何慧琳,

In a modern society , women should be independent ,we should do anything by ourselves as much as we can. Would are independent here in the USA even after marriage it is their choice if they want to work or be a stay home women. IN our culture it used to be that women stayed home and cleaned and cooked but, now a days women don't stay home after marriage they continue to work.

Do women in China still stay home after marriage?

Blanche/Stanley-Abusive relationships

Hello by Huang Limei. In a way I can agree with you when Blanche lives in a "shadow land" from her past but she was mentally unstable. She was unable to control her feelings and the things she heard and sometimes said. In today's society plenty of people live in their past because they cannot let certain things go. On the other hand I disagree with you when you say Stanley was a somewhat decent man. No decent man would hit his wife or demonstrate alcoholic behavior in front of women. He had many issues to sort out.

Do you have 24 Hour fitnesses in China?

I agree with you and think that you are right because men in these times thought they superior then women and women had no rights or voice so the women had to rely on men wither they liked it or not.Was china the same way a few years ago?

Hey Chen Xingzhen.You said

Hey Chen Xingzhen. You said how could Stanley abuse his wife. I asked the same question and its hard to grasp. In our culture relationship abuse is common and doctors work hard to find out the reason why men do this. Does relationship abuse happen a lot in ur country?

Reply to Pan Xiao

Hey Pan Xiao!
Men used to dominate women in the past. Thankfully times have changed and women have the same rights as men, and men and women are thought to be equal. Women no longer depend on men to survive and can strive to be whatever they want to be in the work field. How are women viewed in your society? Are they viewed as weak and dependent on men, or independent and strong?

Hi, Cuini! YOu said that

Hi, Cuini! YOu said that Stanley love Stella though he beats her. I don't think Stanley love her. First, man don't beat a women he loves. Second, man don't beat a woman when she has a baby. If I were Stella, I won't forgive Stalle, because this is a cycle of relationship abuse. If people don't stop it, it will go forever.
SO what do you think about relationship abuse? How will you prevent it?

Response to Wang Lingzhen

Hi Wang Lingzhen,
I agree with your thoughts about Blanche, and how you thought she seemed like a sensitive, beautiful and gentle lady. However, from the very beginning of the movie I also sensed that she behaved strangely. She always seemed nervous and very dramatic. This could have been because she was not used to the way that Stella and Stanley lived, she was used to a very different environment. Do you ever act different when you're in an unfamiliar place or situation? Many people in our society do not always know how to handle drastic change and can act shy when they are experiencing something new.

Hello Pang Jiantao, I

Hello Pang Jiantao, I strongly agree with you evaluation of Stanley and how he is a violent drunk person when intoxicated. Stella and Blanche are terrified of Stanley when he starts to drink or is playing poker around his friends. When he hit Stella he was angry and frustrated but once he went to sleep and woke up the next morning, he felt rejuvenated and horrible about what he has done. Do you feel like Stanley learned his lesson at the end of the day?

This is directed to Huang Fangping---黄芳萍.
You're right about all the character descriptions, but the one that caught my attention was when you said that Mitch is easily tempted. I don't think it's like that with him at all. See, when Blanche told him she wanted to take it slow because she didn't want to seem like an object, Mitch respected that and I think he took it very well. If you can recall, he asked Blanche for a kiss, showing the respect he has towards her and the type of control she had that came with it. Mitch simply didn't want to break a woman with such caliber. When the truth was revealed to Mitch about her, his trust and respect disappeared, learning that Blanche really doesn't live up to what she said she was but the complete opposite. Of course, with a man learning that, he wanted to take advantage of the situation because he was hurt. He was betrayed and realized that sex was pretty much what Blanche was about so he thought hey, might as well right? But of course to defend her point she had to threaten him that she was going to yell out fire. It
is to my understanding that the Chinese always have had respect for everyone. Do situations like this happen? Do women of your culture disrespect their bodies like this?

re:Cheng Lan

I totally agree with you, the movie does represent the hardship of women in the world, who where dominating by men. you said that Blanche does not trust men. well i Still think that many women today do not trust men. I know from experience's that i have problem trusting people. I think the reason why women do not trust men is because of formal experience and have real bad experience with men. It has to do with the environment we live in or how we where raise. It really sad that some cultures still haven't change and men are still dominant then women and women are not treaded equal. i know in my culture ,women serve the men, hand and foot. I know i should not assume but, in China are men still more dominate then women?

I agree with you Ye! Stella is a very compassionate woman who would do anything for the ones she loves. She accepts her older sister into her home, and stays with her abusive husband. Yet through all this and more, she keeps a smile on her face. She defends her sister against the hate Stanley holds for her, while also defending Stanley against Blanche's dislike towards him. Stanley does not deserve as good a woman as Stella is. She is a great woman who needs to fine a better guy!

Hi Pan Xiao, I read your comment and you have probably saw all of The Streetcar Named Desire already, and yes woman today have changed a lot. I'm glad that it has come to be like that in the U.S., so I'm wondering if it is like this in China? Like here, woman are able to do anything here, the only thing that might stop them from certain things that men do is probably because of difference in physicality (woman are much weaker than men) but other than that its almost equal to men.

Hi Chen! After reading your blog post i noticed that you have very good English, ha ha. I agree with you that Blanche is a little bit mentally-disordered. I think that shes that way because she has been hurt and betrayed by men so many times that she is now emotionally dependent on them. Are a lot of women dependent on men in china? I also think that she is stuck at Stella and Stanley's house because she has a bad status and no one else would let her stay with them. Is social status really important in China? Hope to hear from you soon!

( by Liu Yin---刘 颖"

Liu Yin,
I absolutely agree with you that Mitch is a gentleman, but in the beginning of the story. As the story progresses, Mitch slowly turns into very rude person. He starts to treat Blanche the way that Stanley treats Stella. I think that it is a point where men become comfortable enough in a relationship that they feel that they have a "right" to treat their partner the way that they do.
Recently I was in a play called the Vagina Monologues (Have you heard of this in your country?). It is a direct plea and recognition about women's rights. There is one part in the play that talks about domestic violence among Native American Indian tribes. They talk about how it is a "right of passage" to beat their wives and girlfriends after a certain amount of time in the relationship.
This seems to be a common pattern within relationships. Sure, the men start out as nice as can be. But once the get comfortable the real animal comes out.

Hello Yaodong!

We are also looking forward to working with you and your students, Yaodong. It will be fun to have our students share their ideas on the same themes of these books since these topics are so relevant to our society today. Thank you for your nice words about me and my students. You also mentioned connecting through a web cam and my students have shown an interest to be involved in this type of "live" conference so maybe we can set that up again this year as we did last year. I also appreciate you and your dedication with connecting your students with mine every year. Your motivation inspires my motivation! Thank you, for all you do for our collaborative projects.

哈哈 想不到这里也有中国学生吧~呵呵~

(Basically what I say is I told him I am a Chinses, and I am taking school here. Also I left my QQ(like facebook here) and MSN number, so they can contact with me or write me an E-mail.)

I am sorry my class didn't read the A streetcar Named Desire, we read the Glass Menagerie instead of it~

WOW! What a great project, Yaodong! I wish I was in your class when I was trying to learn a second language!

I haven't seen the movie or read the book, but it obviously was provocative and elicited student response. Bravo!

I did have students for awhile, a small group of absolute beginners from France, Italy, Romania, Lithuania, and China (Shanie was advanced) but it was just for fun and to be able to communicate and make friendships. Mostly I am an in person elementary teacher.

I made voicethreads for my students, you can still see them here.

Great work, Yaodong. Thank you for taking the time to share your projects on EFL : )
