About

Comparing Commercials

I really love teaching language by also teaching media literacy, getting students thinking about media and becoming critical consumers of media.

One standard lesson has always been showing a series of commercials and students watching, filling out a commercial analysis form and then discussing the differences between the commercials.

These two commercials from Cadillac and Ford go even further. Ford produced the second one based on the original from Cadillac, mocking that commercial. [read more about the controversy here] Great for students to compare the philosophies promoted and also the differences in language between the commercials.

Download the commercials and use with this handout / listening transcript I produced. You might also want to use the first commercial as a starting point for a lesson contrasting American values with those of other cultures.

If you use this, let us know how it went!  Also, see a lot more suggestions about using commercials in the English language classroom in this Lesson In A Can.
