I'm extremely proud of EFL Classroom 2.0 - our members, our supporters, just the fact that we've created a place helping thousands upon thousands of teachers (and by default students), in every corner of the world.
Every day, teachers download thousands of resources, stream thousands of videos/presentations - all for free. And I've made it my agenda to try my best to keep things fresh, personal and focused on teacher development.
Part of that is surviving and paying our costs. For our first 4 years we were 100% free. However, with success came increased costs, a lot more time needed to correspond with teachers (you won't believe how many teachers daily I do write emails to!), to reply to bugs/fixes and to add content, ideas etc...
To pay our costs, I started the supporters campaign. Made the Lessons In A Can the central focus and spent a lot of time making these lessons air tight and the best a teacher could find. Since August we have indeed covered our direct costs we need to pay for servers, applications, etc... Still, the start of this year has been a disappointment (only 2 supporters added) and I also hate having to ask members in newsletters. Feels like begging and I dread it - but it seems to be the only thing that brings in one time, lifetime supporters donations. The only alternative is to make the whole community only for supporters - I'm thinking seriously about this and your comments are welcomed.
I recently did a tour of the EFL / ESL universe looking at what other sites charge. I am really flabberghasted! They don't have even one thousandth of what we have AND charge ongoing subscriptions. Here - just pay a one time, lifetime donation - recommended $19.95. Also no advertisements etc...
It is almost usery, really is. Here are just a couple examples below. And all you get are tepid worksheets.
So, I'm calling on our members to support us with a Supporters one time, lifetime donation. No subscriptions, no tricks. Just one payment, a fraction of what it costs for other sites. Let's keep this unique community going and fighting the walled up universes of commerce that are out there...
