English Star's video of your humble servant

I answer the 10 questions in English Star's "Interesting People" series. As you can see by my hesitation, I much prefer being behind the camera instead in front of it!

You are so cute! : ) New Jersey to South of France- lucky guy! Where you live is beautiful... where you work is like... New Jersey!

You know what impresses me, Mike? That you were able to create a successful business teaching English, while giving of your resources so generously... very 60's/70's of you! Hey, my daughter's a film maker, and she loves to travel... you should look her up online...adelepham.com : )

Ellen, I see you're from the extra cool city of Portland, Oregon. Do you still live there? And you have the stereotypical New Jersey Turnpike view of my home state. Hey, it's called the Garden State, because beyond that industrial view made famous by the Sopranos (a view I had to put up with for many years 5 days a week before coming to live in France), there really are forests, and even small unspoiled mountains, and... lots of gardens, the best corn in the world (albeit genetically modified nowadays). // I've never considered myself particularly generous. I'm just a worker bee, and this is the way things turned out. // Just came back from your daughter's site. Adele's work is really professional. Not "learn as you do, trial and error" videomaking like I do.

Oh, I will tell her that- it will make her smile. She is not very pretentious, at 5'4", half Asian and a woman, seems she always has to fight for recognition (the fighting might just be part of her heritage). Hey, I was born at Elizabeth General! Both grandfathers worked at Standard Oil, during the big fire... can I get more NJ than that? We also lived in Sparta when I was very little, I know it is the Garden State : ))... but, it always stank for a portion of the ride to my grandmother's house in Rahway once we moved far out on Long Island! We actually had to roll up the car windows :D

Truth be told, I love the Atlantic ocean, I miss the sound of it. The Pacific is beautiful, but just a roar : ) I've lived in Portland for 30 years, still here. It is... the most easy going little city to live in. Very easy to come back to, too. Hmm, I'm getting nostalgic, and I haven't even left yet!

My father used to say, NJ has the best tomatoes. Said that about strawberries too, until he tasted fresh Oregon ones. Little and so, so sweet : ).

PS I know my girl... for a trip to France, she'd film anything for you!! (Loves, loves loves to travel.)

I had no idea that you were also a Jersey Girl. Coincidence, coincidence. My most recent videotaping was in Seattle, and we passed through, and walked around Portland on our way. Like we used to say, your town just felt so hip.

Does Adele work with video or with real film? I'd love to do some filming with her... I use a cheap 3-ccd 4-year old panasonic camcorder. I used to use professional video equipment but there's no point to it anymore for my uses. I should get an HD camcorder in order to "keep up". In any case, I used my cheap panasonic camcorder to shoot for a friend who works for CNN, and my cheap but steady footage was on CNN TELEVISION - everything has changed!

Hey Mike, I talked with Adele and she said that would be great if you two can film together. Right now she's working on getting public funding for a project teaching film making to teenage immigrant girls from Queens (she lives in Brooklyn) as they make a documentary about their lives. She just spent all night editing a short she made to apply for the funding and said she'd have the short online in a couple days.

Adele fell in love with darkroom photography when she was ten, and kept it up diligently through college, but finally went the way of the world, and digital, about 4 years ago. She filmed the photograph scenes in Parallel Adele in super 8 film for the effect, and has done some work editing real film, but almost all of it has been digital. She recently bought a Sony Ex-1 and likes it, especially because it's small? I don't really know what I am talking about here : ). I asked her about some very expensive lenses she has used, not in her own work, but in commercial projects she has worked on- one lens cost $30,000 and another $50,000- how can that be? and she said, eh, you just use a lens adapter to attach the lens to your camcorder, it makes the film look gorgeous : ). She shot Parallel Adele with a borrowed JVC HD camcorder that she didn't like very much, and the Obama film was shot mostly with borrowed camcorders too. She's happy to have the Sony.

So if you have a film project or idea, contact her, Mike, she'd enjoy hearing from you. She's very open to other people's enthusiasm, especially if it involves travel : ).

PS You were FILMING in Seattle, Mike, FILMING : ) It sound so much more.... like the South of France sounds to Jersey girls that way!!
