Amazing... I used to play the piano and it took me eleven years to reach the similar results:-)) I was afraid of my teacher, she was even able to drive me to tears - consequently I started to diddle it, practiced just before my class, hated public performances... I stick at it only because I loved to play for myself (when I was in a bad mood or angry, sad...yes, usually then) - so there was something wrong/rotten in this approach.
This teacher seems to be so inspiring that he can evoke strong self-motivating powers in a student, which can make wonders. And more - they want to share it, give a piece of themself through music! (one thing I have never learnt...)
Another aspect is that he is dealing with almost adults who can consciously and better work with themselves if they are focused on/into something (but when you teach small children you have a different kind of advantage of course).
Now I more often play the guitar (to my children), it is handier;-)
