It amazes  me, even having been an american all my life, the richness of our land. On the 4th of July, there are two other things I am humbled and made happy by- when taken as a whole, the true diversity of our people (no matter what the tea party and, alas, most of the republican party would like us to believe- and eventually, not even that far into the future, our diversity will be impossible to politically suppress), and our concept/ understanding/ deep overall commitment to freedom of speech. There have been many glaring... fall-downs in our history, but freedom of speech keeps rising back up and becoming more true to that ideal. For a big country that has survived for 200+ years under the same political system, that is something to be humbled by and proud of.
